No. 16 women's basketball rallies from 20-point deficit to defeat Brockport

Tigers end game on 13-0 run

BROCKPORT, NY – The No. 16 RIT women's basketball team rallied from a 20-point second half deficit to improve to 4-0 on the season after knocking off The College at Brockport (2-2), 61-56 from the Jim and John Vlogantis Gymnasium Tuesday evening.
 
RIT trailed 32-18 at halftime and 38-18 inside the first minute of the third quarter. RIT would respond, going on an 18-5 run, including a long 3-pointer by Cori Okada (Fullerton, CA/Troy) to cut the Golden Eagles lead to 43-36. Brockport would withstand the run and lead 49-38 after three quarters of play.
 
The Tigers would chip away at the lead before Brockport's Bailey Pratt drained a 3-pointer to make it a 56-48 game with 4:32 remaining. RIT's defensive intensity and press would take over, as the Tigers scored the final 13 points. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Sabrina Wolfe (Troy, NY/Troy) would cut the Golden Eagles to 56-54 with 2:35 left. She would then tie the game on a layup off an assist from Okada after Brooke Stanley (Minnetonka, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) stole the ball with 2:02 left.
 
RIT forced another turnover and with 1:35 remaining, Tara Lynch (Green Township, NJ/Newton) gave RIT its first lead since 2-0, draining a jumper from the wing to make it 58-56. Two missed Brockport free throws and an errant jumper would give RIT the ball back in the final 30 seconds. Lynch would hit 1-of-2 free throws and after another Brockport miss, Lynch would seal the win with two more free throws, as RIT out-scored Brockport, 23-7 in the fourth quarter and 43-18 over the final 19 minutes.
 
Wolfe, who scored eight points in the fourth quarter, led four Tigers in double figures with 15 points to go along with seven boards and two steals. Okada had 14 points, seven assists and four steals, while Stanley finished with 14 points, four assists and three steals. Lynch recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards, while Alyssa Juergens (Rochester, NY/Hilton) added 10 boards.
 
Pratt led the Golden Eagles with 17 points, including five made 3-pointers. Emily Nestler added 15 points, eight boards, three assists and three blocks.
 
RIT struggled mightily from the field over the first three quarters, shooting just 30 percent (16-for-53). The Tigers turned it on when it counted, shooting 8-for-14 (57 percent) in the fourth quarter. RIT had 14 steals and forced Brockport into 20 turnovers, while committing just eight. Brockport out-rebounded RIT, 43-39.
 
The two teams traded leads early on before Brockport went on a big run to gain the big advantage. Wolfe cut the Brockport lead to 12-10 late in the first quarter before the Golden Eagles went on a 16-2 run over a span of 8:42 to lead 28-12. Brockport would lead 32-18 at the break.
 
The Tigers shot just 23.5 percent (8-for-34) from the field in the opening half. Brockport shot 44.8 percent from the field (13-for-29), as Nestler led all scorers with 12 points.
 
RIT has now won five straight meetings against the Golden Eagles.
 
RIT is off for the holiday weekend and returns to action on Friday, Nov. 30 by opening up Liberty League play with a home contest against Bard College that gets underway at 5 p.m.
