ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT volleyball team (23-4) had its six-match winning streak snapped, falling to The College at Brockport (19-9) in four sets from Clark Gym Tuesday evening. Brockport has now won 10 straight matches.
The Tigers suffered their first home loss of the season, as they had won their first nine matches from Clark Gym. It is only RIT's second loss overall since the opening weekend of the season.
RIT out-scored Brockport, 67-55, but committed 23 hitting errors and 13 service errors which proved to be the difference.
Brockport led throughout the opening set on its way to earning a 25-21 win, while hitting .286.
RIT hit .500 in the second set and built a big lead en route to a 25-16 victory. In set three, RIT built an 18-15 lead before Brockport scored five straight points to grab a 20-18 edge. RIT would rally to tie the set at 21-21 before Brockport would pull back ahead and hold on for the 25-23 win.
In set four, Brockport used a 10-3 run early in the set to take control. The Golden Eagles would lead by as much as eight, 19-11, before RIT would try make a late run. Brockport would prove to be too tough, taking the fourth and final set, 25-17.
Laiken Fox led a potent Golden Eagles attack by hitting .464 with 16 kills. Cassie Birth added 14 kills, while Lindsey Luce added 12. Kerri McHale dished out 45 assists, while Christa Mickol added a match high 18 digs.
Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) recorded a double-double for the Tigers with 20 kills and 12 digs to go along with a pair of blocks.
Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) added 12 kills and nine digs, while
Kelly Waters (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) hit .444 with nine kills and two blocks.
Shelby Doheny (Moreau, NY/South Glens Falls) added eight kills and a match-high five blocks, while
Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) dished out 44 assists to go along with seven digs, four kills and two service aces.
Parkinson moved into fourth place all-time at RIT with 4,456 career assists.
"Brockport did a really good job making adjustments, especially, after set two," said RIT head coach
Jim Lodes. "We did a great job with our sideout offense in that set. We had a few too many unforced errors against a relentless opponent and needed to keep the pressure on them. I think this was a good match to force us to keep developing towards our goals."
RIT completes the regular season by hosting the New York State Regional Challenge from Clark Gym on Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Nov. 27. First up for RIT will be Montclair State University at 7 p.m. Friday. The Tigers will host New York University and St. John Fisher College on Saturday.
