ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT volleyball team (24-4) rolled to a 25-22, 25-9, 25-15 win over visiting Montclair State University (17-8) at the New York State Regional Challenge held at Clark Gym on Friday evening.
The Tigers had 59 points to 26 for Montclair State with a season-high 16 service aces. RIT also had 42 kills and 39 digs.
RIT hit .300 in the opening set with five services to earn a 25-22 win. The Tigers trailed 15-11 before going on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good.
In set two, RIT was in control from the start, hitting .379 with 14 kills and six service aces, rolling to a 25-9 victory. The Tigers cruised in set three, leading from the outset then using a 13-5 run to close out the match.
Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) slammed a match-high 16 kills to go along with six digs.
Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) had a match-high nine digs, eight kills and two service aces, while
Kelly Waters (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) added six kills and
Sara Taylor (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) chipped in with five.
Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) dished out 38 assists, had five digs and two aces.
Kathryn Vogl (West Seneca, NY/St. Mary's) had a career-high six service aces, while
Maria Simonetti (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) recorded eight digs and three service aces.
"I really felt that we got better as the match went along," said RIT head coach
Jim Lodes. "We really performed well tonight. It was a great match to begin the weekend."
Natalia Majkut hit .500 with six kills for Montclair State, while Ashley Griffith dished out 13 assists and Siyara Herbert added five digs.
RIT closes out the regular season with a pair of matches against New York University at 11 a.m. and St. John Fisher at 1 p.m. on day two of the New York State Regional Challenge.
