Women's basketball wins third straight contest with road victory at Rensselaer

TROY, NY — The RIT (14-3, 8-2 Liberty League) women's basketball team picked up big road win Friday evening, defeating Rensselaer (10-7, 6-4 Liberty League) 80-59. Tara Lynch (Green Township, NJ/Newton) led a quartet of Tigers to score in double-figures, finishing with 17 points. 

Lynch was 7-of-8 from the field to finish with 17 points. Cori Okada (Fullerton, CA/Troy) tallied 13 points, while Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY/Scholars Academy) scored 12 points. Amanda Olsen (Glen Mills, PA/Archmere Academy) had a double-double scoring 10 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and handing out six assists. RIT shot 53.4 percent from the field on 31-of-58 shooting. The Tigers were an impressive 13-of-26 from behind the arc, and made five free throws.  

Elizabeth Eckhardt led Rensselaer with 16 points. LaKissa Martin tallied 11 points, while Sam Krumbhaar chipped in 14 points off the bench. Shaina Iton grabbed 11 rebounds. 

RIT trailed 7-2 in the first quarter, but scored 10 straight points, taking 12-7 lead on a layup by Okada at the 4:20 mark of the quarter. An Okada 3-pointer with 3:48 to play gave the Tigers at 15-10 lead. Abby Judd (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) scored late in the quarter to give the Tigers a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes.

RIT outscored the Engineers 22-15 in the second quarter to lead 39-27 at the intermission. Okada led the Tigers with 10 points in the first half on 4-of-9 shooting. Olsen tallied six points and grabbed five rebounds. She converted an old-fashioned 3-point play at the end of the half to give RIT a 12-point advantage. The Tigers shot 51.7 percent from the floor. RPI held a slight 15-13 rebounding edge.

The Tigers scored the first eight points of the third quarter, jumping out to a 47-27 lead on a 3-pointer from Glaz. Later in the quarter, Glaz scored two straight buckets for RIT, giving the Tigers their largest lead of the game on her layup to make it 51-28.

RPI answered with an 11-4 run to end the quarter, to cut the RIT lead to 55-39. Eckhardt converted a pair of free throws with 1:15 to play to cut the RIT lead to 16 points. Eckhardt and Krumbhaar drained two straight three's early in the fourth quarter, cutting the RIT lead to 12 on Krumbhaar's 3-pointer with 7:13 to play. That capped off a 19-4 run by the Engineers.

Abby Judd (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) extended the RIT lead back to 18 points with her three-pointer with 2:41 to play. Brooke Stanlet extended the Tigers lead to 75-55 with her layup with 2:25 to play in regulation. The Tigers outscored RPI 25-20 in the final quarter to win their third straight game.

The Tigers scored 15 points off of 13 RPI turnovers and had 25 points off the bench.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 27 when the Tigers face William Smith College at 2 p.m. in Geneva, N.Y.
