Women's swimming and diving improves to 6-1 with exciting victory over Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's swimming and diving team improved to 6-1 on the season with an exciting 150.5-149.5 win over cross-town rival University of Rochester (6-4) at Judson Pool Saturday afternoon. The Tigers clinched the win with a second place finish in the final relay event of the meet.

RIT opened the meet with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Brenna Woodling (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East), Amy Adams (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy), Olivia Phillips (Louisville, CO/Fairview) and Katie Mayer (Bristol, VT/Vergennes Union) came home first in a time of 1:51.51, earning the Tigers 11 big points.

Sedera Zbranak (Austin, TX/Lake Travis) won three individual events to help pace the Tigers. She won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:56.00, and was a winner in the 200-yard backstroke with a winning time of 2:06.93. She won her third even, the 100-yard butterfly, winning in a time of 59.24. Other winners included Addy Maykish (Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:11.05), Amy Adams (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.70), Mayer in the 50-yard freestyle (25.34), and Emily Lederman (Morgantown, WV/Morgantown) in the 100-yard freestyle (56.54).

Adams finished six seconds ahead of the runner up in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Adams and Mayer took second and third, respectively in the 200 yard breaststroke finishing .23 seconds apart at 2:34.03 and 2:34.26.

RIT picked up valuable points in both diving events. In the 1-meter competition Alaiya Tuntemeke (Livonia, NY/Livonia) was first (245.90), while Patsy Hayes (San Jose, CA/Abraham Lincoln) was second (224.45). Jessica Kaups (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) came home fourth, earning RIT two critical points. It was the same order in the 3-meter event with Tuntemeke winning with a score of 235.32, while Hayes was second and Kaups placed fourth.

The meet came down to the final relay. The Tigers clinched the win with a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Mayer, Lederman, Zbranak and Daylen Smith (Lockwood, NY/Waverly) earned four important points for the Tigers, placing second in a time of 1:41.45.

RIT returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 24 when the Tigers host William Smith College at 7 p.m. at Judson Pool.
