Men's basketball completes weekend road sweep with win at Clarkson

POTSDAM, NY – The RIT (8-8, 6-3 Liberty League) men's basketball completed the weekend sweep with a 79-71 win at Clarkson University (6-10, 2-7 Liberty League) on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers outscored the Golden Knights 40-32 in the second half to secure its third straight win.

RIT shot 52.5 percent from the floor on 31-of-59 shooting. The Tigers went 8-of-18 from beyond the arc, and made all nine free throws. Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) led RIT with 28 points and four assists. Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) tallied 20 points, six assists and four steals, while Robert Aguilera (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds.

Matt Higgins led Clarkson with 20 points and eight rebounds. Liam Ellis and Gary Hanley each scored 12 points for the Golden Knight, who shot 46.6 percent from the floor.

The Tigers led by as many as eight points in the first half. Cobey Adekanbi (Bloomfield, CT/Loomis Chafee) gave the Tigers a 32-24 lead on his layup with 5:47 to play in the half. Four straight points from Hanley pulled Clarkson to within 32-31.

Lewis made a pair of free throws with 2:05 to play to give the Tigers a 39-34 lead late in the half. Clarkson tallied the last five points of the half to tie the score at 39-39 at the break.

Matt Higgins gave the Golden Knights a 44-43 lead early in the second half on his 3-pointer at the 18:29 mark. Pierre-Louis capped off a RIT run, draining a 3-pointer with 13:07 to play in regulation that gave RIT a 57-47 lead.

Higgins got Clarkson as close as five points when he nailed a jumper with 5:04 to play, cutting the RIT lead to 67-62. A pair of free throws from Lewis increased the RIT lead to 73-62 and capped off a 6-0 run with 3:13 to play.

Clarkson went on a spurt, outscoring the Tigers 8-0, cutting the Tigers lead to 73-70 on a layup by Ellis with 1:17 to play. The Tigers made all six of their free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

RIT held a 33-27 rebounding edge, including 12 offensive boards. The Tigers scored 14 second-chance points and 30 points in the paint. RIT's bench chipped in 17 points, and the Tigers scored 19 points off of 16 Clarkson turnovers.
 
RIT returns to action on Friday, Jan. 26 when the Tigers play Rensselaer at 8 p.m. The Tigers defeated the Engineers 78-73 in overtime at Clark Gym earlier in January.
