Women's basketball has seven-game winning streak snapped at No. 9 Rochester

Tigers lose first game of 2017-18 season

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (7-1) women's basketball team had its seven game winning streak to start the 2017-18 season snapped with a 78-68 loss at No. 9 University of Rochester (10-1) at the Louis A. Alexander Palestra on Tuesday evening.

RIT shot 37.9 percent from the floor on 25-of-66 shooting. The Tigers went 5-of-21 from behind the arc, and 13-of-16 from the foul line. Cori Okada (Fullerton, CA/Troy) led the Tigers with a season-high 23 points, and six rebounds. Tara Lynch (Green Township, NJ/Newton) tallied 15 points, while Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY/Scholars Academy) chipped in 13 points. Sabrina Wolfe (Troy, NY/Troy) tallied 12 points and had a team-high eoght rebounds.

Alexandra Leslie led Rochester with 20 points and added 14 rebounds. Lauren Deming chipped in 17 points for the Yellowjackets, who shot 37.7 percent from the floor.

RIT led early, but the Yellowjackets used an 11-0 run to lead 17-14 at the end of the first quarter. Rochester outscored the Tigers 24-20 in the second quarter to lead 41-34 at halftime. It waa the first time all season that RIT trailed at halftime.

Okada, Lynch and Wolfe led the Tigers with nine points apiece over the opening 20 minutes. The Tigers shot 38.9 percent from the floor on 14-of-36 shooting. Lynch led RIT with five rebounds, while Okada and Sydney Frank (Haverford, PA/Friends' Central) each had a pair of assists. Alexandra Leslie led Rochester with nine points and five rebounds who shot 42.4 percent from the floor.

Each team scored 21 points in the third quarter. The Tigers cut the Yellowjackets lead to five points early in the quarter, but Rochester would answer to lead by as many as nine points. Okada led the Tigers with eight points in the quarter to go along with three assists and five rebounds.

RIT would make a run in the fourth quarter, cutting the Rochester lead to four points on a bucket by Okada with 6:48 to play in regulation. Lynch tipped the ball away from a Yellowjacket player and found a streaking Okada who laid the ball in to cut the Rochester lead to 66-62. Brynn Lauer drained a 3-pointer on Rochester's next possession to build the lead back to 69-62.

With just over five minutes to play in regulation, Lynch scored underneath and converted the old fashioned three-point play with a free throw to cut the Rochester lead back to 69-65. Okada scored a floater in the lane to cut the Rochester lead to 69-67 with 4:33 left. It was the closest RIT had been since the first half.

Lynch had a chance to tie the game, 30 seconds later but her shot from underneath the hoop rattled out and Rochester was get the rebound. Leslie scored on the Yellowjackets next possession to extend the Rochester lead to 71-67. Rochester scored four straight points to extend the lead to 75-67 with 1:12 to play and end the RIT threat.

The Tigers came into tonight outscoring their opponents by an average of 30 points per game.

RIT returns to action on Friday, Jan. 5 when the Tigers host Liberty League rival William Smith College at 6 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gymnasium.
