Women's basketball loses tight game at St. Lawrence

CANTON, NY — The RIT (11-3, 6-2 Liberty League) women's basketball team lost its second straight game,64-63 at St. Lawrence University (11-4, 6-2 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from Burkman Gymnasium Friday evening. 

RIT shot 40.3 percent from the floor on 25-of-62 shooting. The Tigers went 7-of-18 from behind the arc, and made 6-of-10 from the foul line. Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY/Scholars Academy) led RIT with 26 points. Sabrina Wolfe (Troy, NY/Troy) tallied 17 points with seven rebounds and three assists. Amanda Olsen (Glen Mills, PA/Archmere Academy) chipped in 14 points, while Sydney Frank (Haverford, PA/Friends' Central) grabbed eight rebounds.

Katie Gallagher led St. Lawrence with 12 points. Meghan Hynes tallied 10 points, while Kaelyn Kohlasch, Marlee Gunn and Katie Frederick each scored eight points. Frederick grabbed eight rebounds for the Saints, who shot 42.4 percent from the floor. 

RIT trailed 17-13 after the first quarter. Wolfe came off the bench to lead the Tigers with seven points in the quarter. She gave the Tigers an 11-10 lead with coast-to-coast bucket with 2:22 to play. Annabella Pugliese converted an old-fashioned 3-point play at the end of the quarter to give the Saints a four-point lead.

The Tigers trailed by 10 late in the second quarter as Pugliese gave the Saints a 34-24 lead on her layup with 1:36 to play. Glaz scored the final five points for RIT to cut the St. Lawrence lead to 34-30. She led RIT with 14 points on 9-of-14 shooting in the half. Wolfe tallied 10 points, while Lynch grabbed four rebounds. RIT shot 34.4 percent from the floor in the first half on 11-of-32 shooting.

RIT outscored St. Lawrence 16-14 in the third quarter, trailing 48-46 after 30 minutes. Trailing 38-30 early in the quarter, the Tigers went on a 9-2 spurt, cutting the Saints lead to 40-39 on 3-pointer from Wolfe at the 6:58 mark. Olsen gave the Tigers its first lead on her jumper with four minutes to play in the quarter. Kohlasch drained a 3-pointer with 1:01 to play to give the Saints a two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Wolfe led the Tigers with seven points in the quarter.

Gallagher gave St. Lawrence a 56-52 lead with her bucket at the 6:54 mark of the fourth quarter. Hynes extended the Saints lead to 59-54 with her 3-pointer with 4:51 to play. Trailing 60-54, RIT ran off six straight points, tying the score at 60-60 on a layup by Lynch off an assist from Wolfe with 1:40 to play. Hynes gave St. Lawrence a 62-60 lead when she converted a pair of free throws with 1:20 to play. 

Glaz gave RIT a 63-62 lead with her 3-pointer from the corner with 37 seconds to play in regulation. Gallagher scored the game-winning bucket with five seconds to play off an assist from Gunn. The Tigers had a chance in the dying seconds, but Wolfe was was hit while driving to the basket, with the ball going to a Saint as the clock wound down.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 20 when the Tigers face Clarkson University at 2 p.m. in Potsdam, N.Y.
