Lewis' late bucket gives men's hoops a key road win at St. Lawrence

CANTON, NY — The RIT (7-8, 5-3 Liberty League) men's basketball team held on for a 75-72 win at St. Lawrence University (3-12, 1-7 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from Burkman Gymnasium Friday evening. Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) scored the Tigers final two buckets, including the game-winner with 25 seconds to play in regulation to give the Tigers the win.

Lewis led the Tigers with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists. Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) and Jaymee Rosser (Newark, NY/Newark) each tallied 15 points for the Tigers, who shot 45.9 percent from the floor on 28-of-61 shooting. RIT went 12-of-27 from behind the arc, and went 7-of-13 from the foul line.

Ben Crawford led St. Lawrence with 26 points and 20 rebounds. Brandon Arnold tallied 17 points, while Dom DeRegis chipped in 13 points for the Saints, who shot 39.7 percent from the floor.

RIT led 40-32 at halftime. The Tigers shot 53.3 percent from the floor on 16-of-30 shooting. Tied 29-29, RIT outscored the Saints 11-3 over the final 5:21 to take an eight-point lead. Rosser led the Tigers with 11 points. Pierre-Louis tallied eight points and dished out four assists. Robert Aguilera (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) chipped in with eight first-half points. DeRegis and Crawford led the Saints with 10 points apiece.

The Tigers took an 11-point lead early in the second half when Pierre-Louis drained a 3-pointer, extending the RIT lead to 43-32. St. Lawrence responded with a 16-5 run, tying the score at 48-48 on a layup by Crawford at the 13:27 mark of the half.

Lewis gave RIT a 58-54 lead with his 3-pointer off an assist from Aguilera with 10:08 to play. Rosser extended the Tigers lead to 64-57, when he converted one-of-two free throws at the 8:14 mark.

The Tigers went scoreless over the next 6:15, falling behind 67-64 on a pair of free throws by Crawford with 3:47 remaining in regulation to cap off a 10-0 St. Lawrence run. Pierre-Louis broke the RIT drought, draining a 3-pointer, tying the score at 67-67 with 2:39 to play.

Arnold sank a deep 3-pointer on St. Lawrence's next possession giving the Saints a 70-67 lead with 2:18 remaining. The Tigers answered right back when Will Atkinson (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) sank a 3-pointer, tying the score at 70-70 with two minutes to play. Crawford gave the Saints a 72-70 lead when he sank two free throws with 1:47 to play in regulation. Lewis tied the score at 72-72 with his jumper with 1:21 to play. With 25 seconds left, Lewis got his own rebound off a missed 3-pointer, drove the lane a sank jumper with 25 seconds to play to give the Tigers a 74-72 lead.

St. Lawrence had a chance to tie with five seconds remaining in regulation. Crawford missed a wide-open layup that would have tied the score. Pierre-Louis grabbed the rebound and sank one-of-two free throws to give the Tigers the win.

The Tigers scored 15 points off of 13 St. Lawrence turnovers, and received 25 points from their bench.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 20 when the Tigers face Clarkson University at 4 p.m. in Potsdam, N.Y.
