ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (6-8, 4-3 Liberty League) men's basketball team moved back into the win column with a 61-57 victory over Vassar College (4-10, 3-4 Liberty League) Saturday afternoon from Clark Gymnasium. Senior
Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) scored the game-winning bucket with 31 seconds to play in regulation to give the Tigers the win.
RIT shot 40.4 percent from the floor on 23-of-57 shooting. The Tigers made 6-of-18 from behind the arc, and went 9-of-15 from the foul line.
Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) led the Tigers with 26 points. Lewis finished with 22 points, while
Robert Aguilera (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) tallied eight points.
Marcell Davis (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Institute) led RIT with seven rebounds.
Lance Tebay led Vassar with 15 points, while Paul Grinde tallied 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Jesse Browne chipped in 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Brewers, who shot 39.1 percent from the floor.
RIT led throughout the first half, taking a seven-point lead on a jumper from Pierre-Louis with 3:20 to play in the half. Tebay drained a 3-pointer with 33 seconds remaining in the half to make it 27-23 RIT.
Vassar opened the second half on a 10-5 spurt, taking a 33-32 lead on a jumper from Grinde. That was also part of a 23-8 run to open the half, as Vassar extended the lead to 46-38 on a jumper from Grinde with 10:16 left. The Tigers answered with a run of their own, outscoring the Brewers 19-9 over a 10-minute span, taking 57-55 lead on a layup from Aguilera with 1:38 to play.
Grinde answered with a bucket of his on Vassar's next possession, tying the score at 57-57.
Will Atkinson (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) had a big offensive rebound on RIT's next possession. He fed Lewis, who hustled into the halfcourt and scored with 31 seconds to play to give RIT a 59-57 lead. The Tigers defense came up big on Vassar's next possession, getting a big stop. Pierre-Louis calmly drained two free throws with 10 seconds to play to seal the win for the Tigers.
Each team had 39 rebounds. RIT had nine offensive boards that led to eight second-chance points. The Tigers were efficient with the basketball, committing only eight turnovers. RIT scored 22 points in the paint to 34 for the Brewers.
RIT returns to action on Friday, Jan. 19 at St. Lawrence University. Tip-off from Canton, N.Y. is 8 p.m.
