ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT volleyball team earned an American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for their excellent work in the classroom for the 2016-17 academic year.

A record 153 Division III teams earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2016-2017 season. This number breaks the previous year's total of 143 to set an all-time high.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average. RIT had a team GPA of 3.48 during the 2016-17 season.

Rebecca Bennett (Springfield, PA/Springfield), Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White), Merritt Rogers, Sarah Szybist (Colorado Springs, CO/Ramstein), Sara Taylor (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) and Anna Valentine (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) garnered 2016 Liberty League All-Academic honors for maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average. Szybist was the CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year for women's volleyball, while Valentine was a CoSIDA Academic All-Region selection.

RIT finished with 21 wins in 2016 and advanced to the Liberty League Semifinals. The Tigers open the 2017 season on Sept. 1.
