Women's Volleyball defeats host Nazareth, 3-1; falls to Russell Sage, 3-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT Women's Volleyball team split a tri-match at Nazareth, Saturday, bouncing back from a 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 25-14) loss to Russell Sage with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20) victory over the host Golden Flyers.
 
First-year Layla Parker logged career-highs of 23 kills in both matches to lead the Tiger attack while adding 11 digs opposite Russell Sage for her second career double-double.

  • RIT scored 10 of the first 11 points of the first set, including four kills by Parker, en route to an early 12-3 lead. Nazareth came back within six, 18-12, following a 9-6 run, but the Tigers later finished with a 4-2 run to take the opener.
  • The Tigers scored the first five points of the second and later led, 11-4, before the Golden Flyers rode a 5-2 run within four, 13-9. RIT scored an 8-5 run for a 21-14 lead, but Nazareth scored six-straight points to make it a one-point set, 21-20. The Tigers scored four of the final six points, including a pair of kills by sophomore Ann Wasula, to clinch a 2-0 lead.
  • Nazareth bounced back from an early deficit in the third to lead, 12-10, before the Tigers scored three points to retake a 13-12 edge. RIT led, 17-16, before Nazareth put together a 6-1 run for a 22-18 lead it would not relinquish.
  • RIT scored the first five points of the fourth, before Nazareth scored six straight. The Tigers used a 5-2 surge to lead 10-8, but the hosts rode a 4-1 run to a 12-11 lead. After trading three-point runs, the Tigers moved ahead, 21-17, with a 7-2 run and later won four of the final five points, including three kills by Parker, to complete the victory.

  • RIT opened a 9-4 lead in the first and later scored five-straight points to build a 14-7 lead. Sage bounced back with a 9-2 run to knot the score, 16-16, before the Tigers scored a 5-2 run for a 21-18 lead. The Gators won seven of the final eight points to close the opening win.
  • RIT lead, 9-4, in the second, but Sage rode a 13-3 surge to a 17-12 lead. The Tigers responded with a 6-1 run to knot the score, 18-18, and pulled ahead twice, including 22-21. Sage scored four of the final five points to earn a 2-0 lead.
  • The Tigers rebounded from an early 5-2 deficit to lead, 10-7, to start the third. The Gators later used a 5-2 run to take a 15-14 edge, but RIT finished the set with a decisive 11-3 run, including four service aces, to take the set.
  • Sage jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the fourth before the Tigers scored six of the next nine points to pull within three, 12-9. The Gators rode a 6-3 run to an 18-12 lead and later closed the set with seven-unanswered points to complete the victory.

RIT hosts Widener on Friday (Oct. 16) at 6:00 p.m. to kickoff Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend. The Tigers will also host Liberty League rival Union on Saturday (Oct. 17) at 11:00 a.m.
