WORCESTER, MA – The No. 8 RIT women's crew team competed at the 2017 National Invitational Rowing Championships on Friday, May 12 on Lake Quinsigamond. The Tigers varsity eight won the petite final.
RIT's varsity and second varsity eight had to qualify for the afternoon finals by competing in morning heats. The top two finishers in each heat progressed to the grand final, the next two to the petite final, and the last two to the third level final.
The varsity eight started the day for the Tigers, battling Tufts down the 2,000-meter course. RIT finished third, with the Jumbos edging the Tigers by less than half a second at the line. Bates finished first with a time of 6:36.502.
In the afternoon's petite final,
Erin Loughran (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy),
Amy Guthrie (Essex Junction, VT/Essex),
Emma Kohler (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius),
Taylor Blackwell (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland),
Cassandra Killion (New Plymouth, ID/Nampa Christian),
Hayley Richardson (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk),
Clarissa Brown (Fairport, NY/Fairport),
Colleen Ryan (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) and
Claire Thomas (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) started fast, pulling away from the field to secure an open water win with a time of 6:57.134. WPI was eight seconds back at 7:05.008. UNH (7:05.241), Hamilton (7:06.228), Colby College (7:11.251) and William Smith College (7:12.792) rounded out the field.
RIT's second varsity eight of

Emma Will (Squantum, MA/Woodward School for Girls),
Mickyla Schnupp (Fairport, NY/Fairport),
Lauren Asselmeyer (Poughquag, NY/Arlington),
Emma Kate Flanagan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs),
Tiffany Cao (Buffalo, NY/Hutchinson Central Technical),
Catherine Evans (Sharon, PA),
Colleen Albert (Burlington, CT/Lewis S. Mills) and
Debbie Kunz (Owego, NY/Owego) also secured a place in the petite final, surging ahead of William Smith for third in their race. The Tigers posted a time of 7:15.341. Wellesley earned first with a time of 7:00.778.
The Tigers went on to stop the clock at 7:11.283 in the petite final to finish fourth. The University of New Hampshire claimed first with a time of 7:01.492. Colby (7:05.996) and William Smith (7:08.005) finished second and third, respectively.
Racing in a finals only format, the Tigers' novice eight of

Varada Krishnadas (Canton, MA/Canton) finished sixth with a time of 8:01.839. Wellesley took home first with a time of 7:12.730.
RIT heads to Lake Mercer in West Windsor, NJ for the NCAA Rowing Championships May 26-27.
