LAKELAND, FL — The RIT baseball team (2-3) fell to No. 24 Suffolk University (4-1) by a score of 2-1 in a tightly-contested matchup at Henley Field Tuesday afternoon.
"This was another well played game by both teams," said RIT head coach
Rob Grow. "We are playing well, we just need to find ways to score more consistently, and if we do that we will get on a good run."
Stevie Branche (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) made his first collegiate start on the mound, going seven innings with an impressive total of 11 strikeouts, allowing two runs on six hits. In the eighth,
Brett Bouchard (Fairport, NY/Fairport) came in, retiring six of seven batters he faced, allowing just one hit.
Dom Scialabba (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) led both teams with two hits, while
Benjamin Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool),
Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville),
Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem), and
Navada Waterman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) also had a hit each for the Tigers. Waterman also scored RIT's run, while
Jason Schulz (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) drove in the Tigers lone run.
For Suffolk, Ryan Pordes pitched a complete game, allowing one run on six hits, with six strikeouts. Seven different Rams registered a hit apiece, and Matt Brenner and Luke Ronchi scored runs. Kevin Belskie and BJ Neil had the Rams' RBIs.
The scoring began in the first inning, as Suffolk got on the board first. Belskie hit a single to deep center field, while Brenner scored from third base. The Rams would then make it 2-0 in the second, when Ronchi scored on an RBI single off the bat of Neil.
The Tigers would then cut the deficit in half in the third inning. With Waterman on third base, Schulz grounded out to shortstop, and with the defense set back, Waterman easily scored. The 2-1 score would stay for the remainder of the game, despite several scoring chances by both teams in the final six innings.
RIT will return to play on Wednesday, as the Tigers will head back to Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla., to take on SUNY Fredonia. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
