Baseball drops tight one-run contest to SUNY Fredonia

Blue Devils scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving Fredonia a 3-2 victory

AUBURNDALE, FL — The RIT baseball team (2-4) dropped a tough 3-2 contest to SUNYAC foe SUNY Fredonia (8-4) on Wednesday night at Lake Myrtle Park.
 
"I think we played very well defensively tonight, but couldn't get the run or two at the end that made the difference," said RIT head coach Rob Grow. "We need to find a way to win these close games moving forward."
 
Navada Waterman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) and Mike Myers (Hamlin, NY/Brockport) scored for RIT. Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) had two hits in the game, while Brett Kajganich (North Royalton, OH/Holy Name), Dom Scialabba (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick), Waterman, and Myers each had one. Kajganich drove in both RIT runs.
 
Tom Dillon (Oswego, NY/Oswego) made his first start of the season, going four full innings, allowing just one run on five hits, and striking out one. Nick Claver (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) came in for 2 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits, while adding three strikeouts. Brett Bouchard (Fairport, NY/Fairport) came in during the seventh inning, allowing the game-winning run game-winning run in the eighth inning to take the loss.
 
For Fredonia, nine different batters registered at least one hit in the game. Ciro Frontale lead all players with four hits, two RBIs, and a run scored in the contest. Derek Fie and James Krolikowski also scored for the Blue Devils.
 
Ryan Landers made the start for Fredonia, throwing 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, with one strikeout. Matt Willhelm came in during the fourth, and threw 5 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just one hit, striking out three to pick up the win.
 
Fredonia took the first lead of the game in the first inning, as Alexio Medina hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Frontale from first base, giving the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.
 
In the third, the Tigers took the lead back. Kajganich hit a two-run single with the bases loaded, scoring Waterman and Myers, to give RIT a 2-1 lead.
 
Fredonia would go on to tie the game up in the seventh, as Krolikowski scored on a Frontale RBI single. Then, the very next inning, Frontale hit the eventual game-winning RBI single, scoring Fie from third.
 
The Tigers are back in action Thursday afternoon as they wrap up the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational against Cornell College (Iowa) at 1 p.m. at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.
