AUBURNDALE, FL — The RIT baseball team (2-2) bounced back with a dominant 18-4 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham (2-2) in seven innings on Monday morning at Lake Myrtle Field.
"We played great baseball," said RIT head coach
Rob Grow. "When you hit like we did today, then you're going to win a lot of games. Now we have to keep it going for the rest of the week."
RIT's bats were red hot after being shut out on Sunday, as the Tigers out-hit the Devils 16-5 and 10 different Tigers scored runs.
Will Gorman (Nassau, NY/Columbia) and
Mike Myers (Hamlin, NY/Brockport) hit home runs,
Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) had a triple and double, while
Navada Waterman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport),
Dom Scialabba (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick), and
Brett Kajganich (North Royalton, OH/Holy Name) each had a double. Myers and Waterman drove in a team-high three runs each, while Kajganich,
Benjamin Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool),
Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville), and Scialabba had two, and three others had one. Schultz, Gorman, and Capra finished the contest with three runs scored. Scialabba and Myers scored twice, and five other Tigers crossed home plate.
On the mound,
Jameson Moran (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) made the start, going five innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out two for his first win of the season. Freshman
Connor Ewing (Fairport, NY/Fairport) came in during the sixth, making his first collegiate appearance, where he threw two hitless innings, with four strikeouts.
The Tigers started the scoring in the first inning, as Gorman hit his 20th career home run, which went off the top of the right field fence and out, making it 1-0. The Tigers would have a one-run lead until the bottom of the third, which is when the bats of RIT heated up. The Tigers scored seven runs in the inning, as Zeglen hit an RBI single, Kajganich, Scialabba, and Waterman hit RBI doubles, and Myers powered home a two-run homer.
The Devils then came back with three runs of their own in the fourth, on a three-run home run by Diego Espinosa. They also added one more on an RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
RIT then put their foot on the pedal in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring six and four runs, respectively.
The six-run fifth inning began with an RBI single to right field off the bat of Myers, and then continued with the help of the two FDU-Florham errors. Schultz and Terzini would also score on RBI singles in the fifth.
In the sixth, Capra, Schultz, Gorman, and
Phil Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) scored runs for the Tigers.
RIT will return to action on Tuesday with a 12:30 p.m. matchup against Suffolk University at Henley Field in Lakeland, Fla.
