ITHACA, NY – The RIT men's swimming and diving team wrapped up action by finishing sixth overall out of 14 teams at the 2017 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) Championship held at the Ithaca College Athletics and Events Center with 698 team points. Stevens won the team competition with 1,497 points.
RIT's divers took center stage, as
Alex Dieroff (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and
Ben Hamilton (Addison, NY/Addison) earned top-five finishes. Dieroff was fourth overall with a strong score of 508.85, while Hamilton finished fifth with a score of 447.95.
Chase Van Duyne (Auburn, NY/Auburn) placed 11th overall.
Steven Paine (York, PA/Dallastown Area) was RIT's top individual swimmer on Saturday, placing eighth in the 100-yard freestyle. He recorded a time of 47.47 seconds in the preliminaries before hitting the wall in 47.39 during the finals.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of
Carl Schlehr (Maineville, OH/Kings),
John O'Gorman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth),
Austin Hayes (Aurora, OH/Aurora), and Paine finished seventh overall in a time of 3:11.91.
John Stelmack (Toccoa, GA/Stephens County) and
Shawn Nevers (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) earned top-16 finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke. Stelmack placed 10th overall in 2:10.50, while Nevers was 16th, recording a top time of 2:11.64 in the prelims.
O'Gorman,
Derek Rothrock (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods), and
Nicholas Genovese (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) earned points for RIT in the 200-yard backstroke. O'Gorman was 16th overall in 1:58.80, while Genovese was 19th and Rothrock, 21st.
Joe Wang (Framingham, MA/Framingham) represented RIT in the grueling 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing 20th overall in a time of 17:39.14.
Next weekend, the divers compete at the NCAA Region 4 Diving Championship, which will once again be held at Ithaca on Feb, 24-25.
