ITHACA, NY – One school record was smashed, as the RIT men's swimming and diving remains currently sixth out of 14 teams with 351 points after day two of the at the 2017 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) Championship held at the Ithaca College Athletics and Events Center. Stevens leads the team competition with 799 points.
RIT's 400-yard medley relay team of
Derek Rothrock (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods),
Shawn Nevers (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial),
Carl Schlehr (Maineville, OH/Kings), and
Steven Paine (York, PA/Dallastown Area) broke a one-year school record, placing sixth overall in 3:30.93 to earn 48 team points.
Sophomore diver
Alex Dieroff (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) recorded a strong second place finish in the 1-meter event, with a score of 489.10 to earn the Tigers 28 team points. He was the third in the preliminaries with a score of 476.90 to qualify for the final, before earning the runner-up nod. Junior
Ben Hamilton (Addison, NY/Addison) was ninth overall with a score of 424.55, while
Chase Van Duyne (Auburn, NY/Auburn) placed 11th with 363.75 points in the prelims.
The Tigers enjoyed an impressive fifth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, placing fifth overall in a time of 1:25.63. The team of
Nicholas Genovese (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury),
John O'Gorman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth),
Derek Rothrock (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods), and
Shawn Nevers (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) earned RIT 50 team points. RIT's "B" team of
Adam Reitz (Hilton, NY/Hilton),
Zachary Ward (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville),
Jason Cook (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) and
Steven Paine (York, PA/Dallastown Area) were 19th in 1:28.48.
Paine placed 13th in the 200-freestyle in 1:45.91.
Austin Hayes (Aurora, OH/Aurora) and
Adam Reitz (Hilton, NY/Hilton) also earned top-25 finishes.
John Stelmack (Toccoa, GA/Stephens County) was RIT's top finisher in the 400-yard individual medley, placing 15th overall in a time of 4:21.66. He recorded a time of 4:20.83 in the preliminaries. Schlehr was RIT's leader in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.07 seconds.
RIT is right back in action on Friday for day three of the UNYSCSA Championships, starting with the preliminaries at 10 a.m. RIT will compete in the 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, and 800-meter freestyle relay.
