Men's basketball eliminated from postseason play with loss at Hobart

GENEVA, NY — The RIT (12-12, 6-9 Liberty League) men's basketball team lost 88-73 at Hobart College (15-9, 10-5 Liberty League) in Liberty League action Wednesday evening. Hobart out-scored the Tigers 22-7 over the final six minutes to earn the win.

RIT shot 46.8 percent from the floor on 29-of-62 shooting. The Tigers went 7-of-21 from behind the arc, and went 8-of-10 from the foul line. Four players scored in double figures, led by Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School)' 21-point effort. Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) added 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Jaymee Rosser (Newark, NY/Newark) chipped in 11 points off the bench, while AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) scored 10 points and had five assists. Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) grabbed seven rebounds, while Robert Aguilera (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) tallied nine points and had six rebounds.

Jamal Lucas led Hobart with 28 points on 12-of-19 shooting. Colin Dougherty added 19 points, while Tucker Lescoe scored 15 points for the Statesmen who shot 52.9 percent from the floor.
 
RIT trailed 21-2 in the first half, but rallied with a 28-10 run to trail 31-30 at the break. Trailing 29-19, Horde scored with 5:05 to play in the half to cut the lead to 29-21. Pierre-Louis scored two straight buckets for RIT, cutting the Hobart lead to 29-25 with his jumper with 2:44 to play. 

Aguilera scored with 2:08 to play to make it a 29-27 lead. After a Hobart bucket made it 31-27, Pierre-Louis struck from deep with a 3-pointer with 48 seconds to play to make it a 31-30 Statesmen lead at the half.

RIT shot 38.7 percent from floor in the first half. The Tigers opened the half 1-of-13 from the floor, but closed it out shooting 11-of-18. Eight different Tigers scored in the first half led by Pierre-Louis and his seven points. Rosser chipped in six points off the bench, while Herman grabbed six rebounds.

The Tigers fell behind by eight points midway through the second half on a layup by Lucas. The Tigers fought back, and a Rosser jumper with 9:25 to play made it 61-55. Lewis score on RIT's next possession to cut the Hobart lead to 61-57.

A Lescoe 3-pointer with 8:11 to play gave the Statesmen a 64-57 lead. RIT responded with a 9-2 run. A Lewis bucket with 7:20 to play made it 64-59. After a Dougherty layup made it 66-59, Lewis drained a 3-pointer with 6:38 to play to cut the lead to 66-62. Aguilera pulled RIT to within two points on his bucket with 5:40 to play. He grabbed the rebound and went coast-to-coast, scoring on a drive to the bucket to make it 66-64 Hobart.

The Tigers tied the score at 66-66 on a jumper by Lewis with 5:16 to play. He got the rebound off a Statesmen miss and brought the ball up the floor. Lewis turned on the speed and drove the lane, stopping and hitting a jumper to tie the score. 

Two straight 3-pointers from Lescoe and Dougherty ballooned the Hobart lead to 72-66 with 4:13 to play. Hobart outscored the Tigers 22-7 over the final 5:16 to hold on for the win.

The Tigers return to action on Friday, Feb. 17 when RIT hosts Union College in Liberty League action from Clark Gymnasium at 8 p.m. RIT will honor seniors Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) and Kevin Drain (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) prior to the game in their final regular season game at Clark Gym.
