ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (4-3) men's basketball team lost 80-75 in overtime to Nazareth College (4-1) top open play at the Second Annual Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout Thursday evening at Clark Gymnasium. The Tigers led 40-31 at halftime, but were outscored 49-35 in the second half and overtime.
The Tigers shot 36.0 percent from the floor on 27-of-75 shooting. RIT made just 3-of-15 from behind the arc, and went 18-of-28 from the foul line.
Robert Aguilera (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) led the Tigers with 17 points, 14 rebounds and a career-high seven blocks.
Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) chipped in 16 points and five assists, while
Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Cody Green led Nazareth with 17 points. Jake Burgio and Tyler Stenglein each tallied 14 points, while Stenglein added 12 rebounds. Chris Jones tallied 11 rebounds for the Golden Flyers, who shot 40.3 percent from the floor.
RIT led by as many as 12 points in the first half, taking a 30-18 lead on a free throw from
Marcell Davis (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Institute).
Wyatt Smith (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) matched the Tigers largest lead with his bucket with 3:51 to play that gave RIT a 33-21 lead. Kevin Underwood cut the RIT lead to 37-31 with 33 seconds to play that capped off a 10-5 spurt by Nazareth. Agulera ended the half with a thunderous dunk that gave RIT a 40-31 halftime lead.
Burgio cut the RIT lead to 44-41 with jumper early in the second half. The Tigers maintained a slight lead throughout much of the second half. A jumper by Lewis with 9:34 to play gave the Tigers a 56-49 lead. Later in the half, Aguilera scored off an assist from Pierre-Louis that gave the Tigers a 65-60 lead. Nazareth answered back scoring seven straight points, taking a 67-65 lead on a layup by Stephen Gabel and a free throw from Stenglein with 2:23 to play.
Lewis converted a pair of free throws with 1:47 to play in regulation that tied the score at 69-69. On the Tigers next possession, Pierre-Louis gave the Tigers a 71-69 lead with his bucket with 1:04 to play. Each team traded possessions until Nazareth tied the score on a layup by Chris Jones with 13 seconds to play.
Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) had a chance to win it, but his shot at the buzzer went off the rim, sending the game into overtime.
In the overtime, Burgio and Stenglein led the way for the Golden Flyers. Stenglein's 3-pointer with 41 seconds to play in the overtime prove to be the game winner.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 9 when the Tigers host St. John Fisher College at 8 p.m. to wrap up play at the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout.
