ROCHESTER, NY — The RIT women's hockey team is back in action for the first time in 2017, as the Tigers hit the road for two games at College Hockey America opponent Mercyhurst this weekend. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m., while Saturday's gets underway at 1 p.m.
RIT last played on Dec. 9-10, 2016, dropping a pair of home games to Bemidji State of the WCHA. The Tigers lost 3-1 on Friday, Dec. 9, before falling by a 5-1 score the following day. Claudia Black (Newmarket, Ontario/St. Maximilian Kobe) and Kathryn Kennedy (Hamilton, Ontario) scored the RIT goals. Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) started both games, making 50 total saves.
RIT begins the stretch run of its season, with 12 games remaining, all against CHA foes. After this weekend, RIT plays two games at Penn State on Jan. 21-22. The Tigers will be back home on Jan. 27-28 for a two-game series against Lindenwood.
Sophomore Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) has emerged as RIT's leading scorer, with five goals and 10 points over her last 10 games. Cornine, who has two of RIT's three game-winning goals this season, tallied a career-high three points on a goal and two assists in RIT's 3-1 win at Rensselaer on Nov. 26 and had both goals in a 2-2 tie at Syracuse on Dec. 2. She leads the team in scoring with 11 points. Reagan Rust (Southaven, MS/Moon Area) and Lindsay Stenason (Oakville, Ontario/Appleby College) lead the way with five assists apiece. In goal, Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) has played in 13 games and has a 2.86 goals against average and a .912 save percentage.
The Lakers come into the weekend series with the Tigers with a 7-14-1 record, and are fourth in the CHA standings with six points. Mercyhurst was in action last weekend against No. 4 St. Lawrence, earning a hard-fought split, winning 5-2 and losing 3-2. Brooke Hartwick leads Mercyhurst with 21 points (11 goals and 10 assists) this season, including four power-play tallies. Junior Jessica Convery has played in 17 games between the pipes for the Lakers, posting a 5-7-1 record, 1.93 goals against average, and a .920 save percentage.
The Lakers lead the all-time series between the schools 15-3, and won all four contests between the two last season. RIT's last win against Mercyhurst came in the 2015 College Hockey America semifinal, a 4-1 victory. RIT won the 2014 and 2015 CHA Championships. Mercyhurst has won 15 straight CHA regular season championships.
