ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (5-2-1) men's swimming and diving team rallied late to earn a 149-149 tie at the University of Rochester (8-3-1) on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers finished first and third in the 200-yard freestyle to secure the tie.
The meet came down to the final event of the afternoon, the 200-yard freestyle relay with RIT trailing 145-136. The team ofÂ
Derek Rothrock (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods),
Jason Cook (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta),
Steven Paine (York, PA/Dallastown Area) and
John O'Gorman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) won the event by just 11 one-hundredths of a second in a time of 1:28.43 to earn 11 points. The team of Nick Genovese,
Ryan Leeson (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois),
Shawn Nevers (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) and
Adam Reitz (Hilton, NY/Hilton) placed third in a time of 1:28.54 to earn two crucial points needed to earn the tie.
Joe Wang (Framingham, MA/Framingham) and
Wil Seifried (Springfield, PA/Springfield) finished first and second in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Wang won the event in a time of 10:31.16, while Siefried was second in a time of 10:36.20. Reitz finished fourth to secure two critical points for RIT.
Paine (1:48.48),
Austin Hayes (Aurora, OH/Aurora) (149.18) and
Tyler Allen (Newark, NY/Newark) (1:53.66) placed first, third and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle. Rothrock won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 55.04 to earn RIT nine points. Genovese and
Scott Brink (Quincy, MA/Boston College ) finished fourth and fifth.
Siefried took first in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in a time of 2:04.80.Â
In diving,
Alex Dieroff (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) won the 3-meter competition with a score of 273.30.
Ben Hamilton (Addison, NY/Addison) (230.25) placed third, and
Chase Van Duyne (Auburn, NY/Auburn) was fourth (172.49). Hamilton placed second in the 1-meter competition with a score of 250.95, while Dieroff was third and Van Duyne placed fourth.
The Tigers opened the day be finishing second and third in the 200-yard medley relay.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 28 when the Tigers face Nazareth College at 1 p.m. in Pittsford, N.Y. It is the final regular season dual meet for RIT.
