GENESEO, NY — The RIT (9-6) women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker Tuesday evening, falling 62-60 in overtime at SUNY Geneseo (15-0). Brooks McKenna scored at the buzzer in overtime to give Geneseo the win. RIT erased a double-digit first-quarter deficit, outscoring the Knights 53-44 the remainder of the game.
Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY/Scholars Academy) led RIT with 16 points, including 10 in the second half and overtime.
Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) added 11 points, while
Sydney Frank (Haverford, PA/Friends' Central) and
Amanda Olsen (Glen Mills, PA/Archmere Academy) each scored nine points.
RIT shot 37.8 percent from the floor on 22-of-58 shooting. The Tigers were 9-of-25 from behind the arc, and went 7-of-11 from the foul line.
Katie Durand led the Knights with 15 points. Geneseo, who remains unbeaten on the season, is receiving votes in the Division III national poll. RIT's tough defense allowed the Knights just seven assists on the evening.
RIT trailed 18-7 after the first quarter. The Tigers scored their first bucket on a 3-pointer from
Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) with 4:31 to play in the quarter. RIT made just three field goals in the quarter.
The Tigers scored the first four points of the second quarter, cutting the Geneseo lead to 18-11 on a jumper by Okada. A
Sydney Frank (Haverford, PA/Friends' Central) 3-pointer at the 7:10 mark cut the Knights lead to 24-14.
Frank struck again at the 6:22 mark when she converted the rare 4-point play after being fouled while making a long range jumper from behind the arc. She made the free throw to cut the Knights lead to 26-18.
Taylor Burns (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) drained a 3-pointer with 4:31 to play in the quarter to cut the lead to 29-24. Glaz pulled RIT to within two points on her 3-pointer with 2:52 to play to make it 29-27 Geneseo. After the Knights rattled off five straight points, Palmitesso scored late in the half to make it 34-31 SUNY Geneseo at the half. RIT outscored Geneseo 24-16 in the quarter.
Glaz gave RIT its first lead of the game with her 3-pointer with 6:01 to play in the third quarter, making the score 37-36 Tigers. She scored five straight points to help the Tigers take the lead.
After Geneseo scored five straight to take a 42-37 lead, RIT answered with five straight points of its own, tying the score at 42-42 on a 3-pointer from
Taylor Burns (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) with 3:45 to play in the third. Geneseo outscored RIT 7-4 over the final minutes of the quarter to lead 49-46 heading into the final quarter.
Geneseo opened up a 51-46 lead on a jumper by Durand early in the fourth quarter. Glaz scored five straight points, including a 3-pointer from the corner with 7:04 to play to tie the game at 51-51. Tied 56-56 late, both teams had shots to take the lead until Palmitesso drove and score with 1:38 to play to give RIT a 58-56 lead. Durant scored for Geneseo on on its ensuing possession to tie the game at 58-58. Olsen and Ryan had shots in the dying stages of regulation to win it, but their attempts fell short sending the game into overtime.
In the overtime, Palmitesso gave the Tigers a 60-58 lead when she drove and scored to give RIT a slim lead. Tied 60-60 with time winding down in overtime, McKenna drove and scored as the buzzer sounded to give the Knights a 62-60 win.
RIT returns to action on Friday, January 20 when the Tigers face St. Lawrence University in Liberty League action from Canton, N.Y. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
