Amy Reed picked up her 100th career victory, as the RIT women's basketball team (10-6, 3-4 Liberty League) snapped a three-game losing streak in league play with a 63-53 victory over St. Lawrence (5-9, 2-4 Liberty League) at the Ronald T. Burkman Gymnasium Friday night.
Reed, who is now in her ninth year with the Tigers, has 79 victories since the start of the 2011-12 season. She is RIT's all-time leader in coaching wins and becomes the first women's basketball coach in program history to reach the century mark.
Senior
Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) led the Tigers, as she matched her season-high 25 points (on 10-for-15 shooting), to go with four rebounds and two assists.
Cori Okada (Fullerton, CA/Troy) also added 15 points six rebounds, and two steals.
Amanda Olsen (Glen Mills, PA/Archmere Academy) had six points and eight rebounds, while
Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY/Scholars Academy) had eight points and five rebounds.
Taylor Burns (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) also added seven points, five rebounds, two assists, and a crucial block for the Tigers.
"We played great defense tonight and really improved on our overall rebounding," said head coach
Amy Reed. "Ash (Palmitesso) stepped up big for us and Tay (Burns) hit some big shots and had a key block and rebound that sealed the game. It was a great win for us."
St. Lawrence had two players score in double digits, as Meghan Hines led the Saints with 11 points, three blocks, and three boards. Shayna Davner also had 10 points, four rebounds, and two blocks.
The Tigers and Saints traded several leads back and forth to start the contest. Halfway through the second quarter, RIT trailed 23-20. But a 9-3 run to finish the half put the Tigers in the lead 29-26, with 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting from Palmitesso.
The Tigers led for most of the second half, but the Saints came back within two with 3:19 left in the fourth quarter. A 10-0 run right after all but sealed the game for RIT.
RIT shot 38.7 percent from the field, making four of its 11 3-pointers attempted in the game. On the other hand, St. Lawrence shot just 34.4 percent, including hitting just six of 25 shots behind the arc.
The Tigers are back in action Saturday, as they travel to take on Clarkson. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. in Potsdam.
