Women's hockey drops road contest at Mercyhurst in first action of 2017

ERIE, PA — The RIT women's hockey team fell 5-2 in its first action of the new year against College Hockey America foe Mercyhurst Friday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

"It was a tough game for us tonight," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Head Coach Scott McDonald. "We couldn't get any consistency during the game. Any time we were able to get a little momentum, Mercyhurst was quick to shut it down."

Catilin Wallace had two points (one goal and one assist), while Brinna Dochniak (Marine on St. Croix, MN/Stillwater) added the other RIT goal. Freshman Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) made 44 saves in goal.

Mercyhurst opened the game with two goals in the first 6:22 of the game. The Tigers cut the lead to one in the second, as Dochniak tallied her second goal of the season. But Mercyhurst would come back with another goal, making it 3-1 after the second. In the third, Wallace tallied her fourth goal of the season, cutting the Mercyhurst lead to two again, but it was ultimately too little, too late, as the Lakers made it 5-2 with 2:24 left.

Mercyhurst out-shot RIT 49-17 in the game, and went 1-for-4 on the power-play. The Tigers were unable to score on three chances with the extra skater.

Sarah Hine scored a pair of goals for the Lakers, while Taylor Accursi dished out three assists. In goal, Jessica Convery made 15 saves for the win.

The Tigers and Lakers are back in action Saturday for game two of the weekend series. Puck drop is set for 1 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Arena.
