ERIE, PA — The RIT women's hockey team (4-19-1, 2-7-1 College Hockey America) snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday with a 4-0 win in the second game of the weekend series against Mercyhurst (8-15-1, 4-6-0 CHA) at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
"Today was a great bounce back game for us," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Head Coach
Scott McDonald. "I'm so proud of how we responded to yesterday's adversity. Terra (Lanteigne) was outstanding in net for us today and that energized the team. The team did all the little things well today. We blocked a ton of shots, back-checked hard and put pucks on their net."
Freshman
Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) picked up her second shutout of the season, as she stopped all 37 shots by the Lakers.
Caitlin Wallace (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate) had two points (one goal and one assist) for the second straight game, while
Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep) (one goal and one assist) and
Kandice Sheriff (Brampton, Ontario) (two assists) also had a pair of points.
Mackenzie Stone (Kars, Ontario/South Carleton) and
Tori Haywood (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's Catholic) also found the net for RIT, while
Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard),
Reagan Rust (Southaven, MS/Moon Area) and
Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School) added assists.
The Tigers got the scoring started in the first period, as Rushton tallied her first goal of the season, putting the Tigers up 1-0. Mercyhurst out-shot RIT 15-6 in the opening frame, but Lanteigne stopped all 15 pucks sent her way.
RIT added to the lead in the second period, scoring twice to lead 3-0 after 40 minutes of play. Stone potted her first goal of the season, on a power-play chance with 7:40 left in the second. RIT was not finished adding to the lead, as Haywood found the back of the net with 38 seconds left, putting RIT up 3-0.
Lanteigne came up big in the third, keeping the shutout alive and stopping all 13 shots by the Lakers. The Tigers sealed the game, as Wallace score an empty-netter with 2:19 left in the game.
Mercyhurst out-shot RIT 37-24, and was 0-for-6 on the power-play. RIT was able to convert once on eight chances with the man advantage.
