UNIVERSITY PARK, PA — The RIT women's hockey team (4-20-1, 2-8-1 College Hockey America) fell 3-0 on Saturday to College Hockey America rival Penn State (6-15-4, 5-5-1 College Hockey America) in the first of two games between the teams at Pegula Ice Arena this weekend.
Penn State goalie Hannah Ehresmann made 20 saves for her first shutout of the season, while RIT goalie
Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) stopped 23 saves, while allowing a pair of goals. Both RIT and Penn State were 0-for-2 on the power-play, and the Nittany Lions won the shots on goal battle, 26-20.
Penn State got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the first 9:06 of the opening period, as Meike Meilleur and Amanda McLeod both found the back of the net. RIT entered the second period down 2-0, and trailing 12-7 in shots.
The second period saw much more balanced play from the Tigers. RIT fired nine shots on net, compared to seven by Penn State. The Tigers had a quick 5-on-3 opportunity at the tail end of the period, but were unable to convert.
Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) had the best chance of the period, as she fired a puck from point-blank range on the two-man advantage, but Ehresmann made a clutch save for the Nittany Lions.
RIT entered the third period with an abbreviated 44 second power-play, but the Tigers couldn't convert on the short opportunity. The two teams combined for only 11 shots on goal in the final period, as the Nittany Lions played a defensive style, preventing the Tigers from getting back in the game. Penn State ultimately added an empty-netter with 2:33 left, as Kate Ryland scored her third goal of the season, making it 3-0.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, with a 12-9-2 record against Penn State.
The Tigers and Nittany Lions will be back in action Sunday for the final game of the season between the two schools, as RIT looks for its first win against Penn State this season. Face off for game two is set for 2 p.m. at Pegula Ice Arena.
