UNIVERSITY PARK, PA — The RIT women's hockey team (4-20-2, 2-8-2 CHA) and Penn State (6-15-5, 5-5-2 CHA) skated to a 4-4 tie on Sunday afternoon at Pegula Ice Arena. The Nittany Lions came back from down 4-0 after two periods, to tie the game in the final minute of play.
"We had a disappointing finish today," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Head Coach
Scott McDonald. "Unfortunately we came out too relaxed in the third. We got away from our aggressive style in the first two periods, and took a couple undisciplined penalties late in the game which led to Penn State's comeback."
RIT Freshman
Madison Farrand (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) scored her first collegiate goal, while seniors
Mackenzie Stone (Kars, Ontario/South Carleton),
Caitlin Wallace (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate), and sophomore
Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) also tallied goals for RIT. Wallace,
Brooke Baker (Saline, MI/Saline),
Taylor Baker (Toronto, Ontario/North Toronto Collegiate Institute) and
Kandice Sheriff (Brampton, Ontario) added assists, while freshman goalie
Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) made 29 saves in the tie.
Shots were 33-29 in favor of Penn State. The Nittany Lions were 2-for-4 on the power-play, while RIT was 0-for-1.
RIT opened the game by scoring three times in the opening period. Farrand opened the scoring 3:29 into the game, as she swiped home a rebound in front after a shot from Baker, making it 1-0. Just past the midpoint of the period, Stone made it 2-0. She stole the puck in the RIT zone and carried it up ice, creating a 2-on-1, where she ripped a slap-shot home for RIT's first short-handed goal of the season. With 6:17 left, Wallace notched her sixth goal of the season, as she back-handed a rebound home, making it 3-0.
Penn State had a few quality chances to get on the board early in the second period, but the Tigers struck again, with 9:57 left in the period as
Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) scored on a 2-on-1, her team-leading seventh goal of the season. The 2-on-1 was set up by great play in transition by Wallace and Baker, who both had assists on the goal. With 1:26 left in the period, Lanteigne made her best save of the game, as she stopped the Nittany Lions on a partial breakaway, and as the puck looked to sneak behind her, she kept it out and swiped it away before any more danger ensued. The Tigers held on for the rest of the second period, holding a commanding 4-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Penn State would come swarming back in the third period with four goals to stun the Tigers. The Nittany Lions got on the board early, when they converted on a power-play chance. Victoria Samuelsson cut the RIT lead to 4-1 on her second goal of the season, 3:24 into the period. Penn State would cut the RIT lead to two, as a wrist shot by Kate Ryland made its way through traffic and into the net with 8:35 left.
Penn State made it a one-goal game on Brooke Madsen's fifth goal of the year with 3:42 left. With 2:04 left in the game, Penn State got another chance with the man advantage. The Nittany Lions made no mistake and tied the game on a rebound goal by Laura Bowman with 57.1 seconds left in regulation.
The teams would go to an overtime period to try and settle this one. RIT led the shots 3-1 in the extra period, but neither team could break the tie. RIT and Penn State ultimately skated to a 4-4 tie in the final game of the regular season between the two schools.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, with a 12-9-3 record against Penn State, but the Nittany Lions went 3-0-1 against the Tigers this season.
The Tigers will return home next weekend for the first time in the 2017 calendar year, as they host Lindenwood University. The Tigers and Lions will face off at 2:05 p.m. on both Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28 from the Gene Polisseni Center.
