PITTSFORD, NY – The RIT women's tennis team (4-8) fared well in doubles play, but fell in a hard-fought road dual to Nazareth (9-7), 6-3 at the Mendon Racquet Club on Monday evening.
The Tigers took two out of three against Nazareth in doubles play, opening up a 2-1 dual lead. The team of
Amelia Ying (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and
Gianna Heaviland (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito) got the ball rolling at first doubles, defeating Nazareth's Jean McCarthy and Allison Friends, 8-5. In third doubles,
Kelsie Redburn (Byram, NJ/Pope John XXIII) and
Marie Jubert (Fairport, NY/Fairport) defeated Elizabeth Karstedt and Lindsey Crawford 8-4, leading into singles play.
Ying completed the personal sweep, defeating McCarthy in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Nazareth won three-set battles in fourth through sixth singles to clinch the victory. In fourth singles, Jubert rallied after dropping the first set to Marisa Joyce, but fell 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
Alyssa Hering (Albion, NY/Kendall) took the first set in her fifth singles match, but dropped the next two sets, falling 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The sixth singles match was a classic between Karstedt and Redburn. After falling on a tie break in the first, Redburn dominated her second set, leading to a deciding third set. There, it went to a second tie break, where she eventually fell to Karstedt, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (7-4).
The Tigers will return to Liberty League play, where they will take on Rensselaer on Saturday at 10 a.m., from the Gordon Field House.
