ROCHESTER, NY – A record setting performance by
Brandon Cohall (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) pushed the RIT baseball team (12-12, 7-5 Liberty League) to a split against Rensselaer (10-19, 9-7 Liberty League) on a warm Sunday afternoon at Tiger Stadium. Cohall went the distance in a 6-0 victory for the Tigers in game one, and RPI rallied back for a 6-2 victory in game two.
Cohall needed 80 pitches and only gave up one hit to earn his fifth career shutout, breaking the RIT record set by Mike Marsillo in 2011. Cohall baffled the RPI batters all afternoon to the tune of 10 strikeouts, allowing only two baserunners, a one-out single by Matt Lawrence in the first inning and a walk to Jason Ramos in the fifth. He faced just one batter over the minimum.
Will Gorman (Nassau, NY/Columbia) provided winning margin in game one for the Tigers in a big way, turning on a 1-1 pitch over the scoreboard in right field. His third homer of the season gave the Tigers the 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. In the sixth, RIT put the game away with a four-run inning. After Gorman singled with one out, Phil Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) was called out on a controversial play. He was called for batter interference, as Gorman was attempting to steal second base. The next batter, Brian Battaglia (Sliver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake), was hit by a pitch, as both benches were warned by the umpire.
From there, the Tigers exploded. Dom Scialabba (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) drove a 2-2 pitch through the left side, scoring Gorman from second. Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) then drove pinch runner Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) home with a single up the middle. In the next at-bat, Mike Myers (Hamlin, NY/Brockport) singled the first pitch he saw through the left side, scoring Scialabba. Then, with Myers on first and Zeglen at third, Myers faked towards second base to force the rundown. The RPI catcher airmailed his throw, as Zeglen trotted home to close the four run inning.
In the seventh, the Tigers tacked on another run, as Sammon drove Zabel in from second base for the 6-0 lead. Cohall then struck out Sam Lawrence and Thomas Desmond swinging, as his Tigers teammates celebrated Cohall's record.
Gorman and Zeglen led the Tigers with two hits each. The Tigers provided seven in the seven-inning contest.
In game two, it was the Engineers who struck early. Lawrence started the RPI scoring with a double in the first inning, adding a second run off a RIT error with two outs. RPI then added runs in the second and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead.
The Tigers then slowly clawed their way back into the game. Zabel got on base in the top of the sixth with a single. The RPI pitcher, Brendan McNerney, then attempted a pickoff move to first, but the throw was wide, as Zabel rounded second and advanced to third. A throw from the first baseman to third to tag out Zabel went high, and Zabel easily scored on the two errors.
The next inning, Scialabba launced a 2-1 pitch into left center field, going over the wall for a solo home run, his first of the season, as RIT trailed 4-2. In the eighth, Battaglia walked to load the bases with two outs. Scialabba just got under a 2-2 pitch, as he popped out to first to end the threat. RPI then added two insurance runs to seal the Sunday split.
McNerney went nine full innings for the Engineers, throwing 136 pitches for the victory. Jameson Moran (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) started for the Tigers, giving up two earned runs with a strikeout in two innings. Kyle Povlock (Fairport, NY/Fairport), Tom Dillon (Oswego, NY/Oswego), and Brett Bouchard (Fairport, NY/Fairport) pitched the six relief innings for RIT.
Sammon went 2-for-4 for the Tigers, who had five hits in game two. Tyler Stephens led RPI with two hits, as the Engineers amassed seven hits to close out the series.
The Tigers took three of four against the Engineers this weekend, winning the regular season series for the first time as a Liberty League member. RIT sits in a three-way tie for second place in the league standings with Rochester and Clarkson, two games behind first-place Union.
RIT will make up a previously rained out contest against the College at Brockport at Tiger Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
