ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball squad (13-12) had its offensive attack break out, picking up 11 runs in an 11-0 shutout victory over The College at Brockport (16-14) at Tiger Stadium on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.
It is the largest margin of victory for RIT this season, and barring any rescheduled games, the Tigers will finish the season series with a 2-0 sweep of the Golden Eagles. RIT defeated Brockport 8-4 on the road on March 30.
The Tigers scored in bunches throughout the contest, racking up 17 hits and seven extra base hits.
Phil Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) led the way, driving in three runs, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning, his second of the year.
Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) and
Benjamin Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) each went 2-for-5, driving in two runs.
Will Gorman (Nassau, NY/Columbia) and
Dom Scialabba (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) each went 3-for-4 and drove in a run.
Jason Schulz (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) also drove in a run, racking up two hits.
Mark Nozzi (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) picked up the victory as the starter, allowing just three hits in four innings of work for his first collegiate win.
Brett DeLola (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker),
Michael Campbell (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit),
Brian Sheridan (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg) and
Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) allowed three combined hits in the remaining five innings of relief work. Campbell made his first collegiate appearance, working a perfect seventh inning.
Six different Brockport players recorded a hit. Jimmy Lovelass started and pitched two innings, allowing two runs in the loss.
The Tigers wasted no time getting in front in the opening inning. After Gorman got on with a two out single, consecutive doubles by Sammon and Scialabba got RIT on the board. In the third inning, after Gorman legged out a grounder to the shortstop for the single, and advanced to second on a stolen base he scored as the Brockport catcher overthrew the third baseman on a steal attempt. Three batters later, Terzini drove in Scialabba and Zeglen with a triple to the gap to push the Tiger lead to five.
The next inning, the Tigers pushed two runs through to put the contest further out of reach. Hogan took a 0-2 pitch deep to right center field for a double, scoring Zabel from second base. After Hogan advanced to third on a wild pitch, Gorman rewarded Hogan, bringing him home with a single into right field.
RIT finished the scoring in the sixth inning with its biggest outburst of the contest.
Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) began the inning, reaching first on a wild pitch after the strikeout, reaching first safely. After Zabel brought him over to second, Hogan singled Mylott in with the RBI. Two batters later, Sammon took a 3-2 pitch deep into right center field, over the fence and into the trees for the two-run shot, bringing the lead to double digits. Scialabba tripled in the next at-bat, and Schulz brought him home with a single to left field to end the scoring.
A couple of key defensive plays kept the shutout alive. In the top of the seventh inning, Joe Bender hit a rocket that hit off the glove of a diving Schulz at third base. The ball rushed over to Zeglen at shortstop, who quickly fired it to Terzini to beat the runner at first. In the ninth inning, after a double by Timothy Segrue, Bender hit a grounder to Zeglen, who wisely threw to third base, with
Jim Schmidt (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker)'s tag beating out Segrue.
The Tigers will return to Liberty League play, hitting the road to take on Vassar in a key four game series on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch for the Saturday doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
