Women's tennis opens spring with second-place finish at Daemen/Medaille Invite

AMHERST, NY – The RIT women's tennis team (2-3) opened up the spring portion of its schedule in a big way, going 2-1 in the Daemen-Medialle Invitational, earning a second-place finish on the campus of Daemen College on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. The Tigers eked out a victory in a Saturday night dual against Alfred, coming out with the 5-4 victory. On Sunday, RIT defeated Medaille, 8-1, before falling to Division II Daemen, 7-2.
 
Gianna Heaviland (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito) went 2-1 in doubles competition, earning all-tournament status. The Tigers had big victories in doubles competition, winning 6-of-8 matches over the weekend.

"It was a fantastic team effort," said RIT women's tennis head coach Zach Remis, who earned his first victory as head coach of the Tigers. "I was extremely proud of how hard everyone competed."
 
In match one, the Tigers and the Saxons split the first two doubles matches. The team of Carol Vo (Mchenry, IL/Mchenry) and Marie Jubert (Fairport, NY/Fairport) won 8-4 over Emma Siemer and Kallie Clapper, before Gianna Heaviland (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito) and Kelsie Redburn (Byram, NJ/Pope John XXIII) fell 8-5. In the third match, Brianna Dimisko (Hyde Park, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) and Alyssa Hering (Albion, NY/Kendall) held off Sarah Grace and Inda Gillet in an 8-6 victory.
 
Moving to singles play, Vo earned an impressive win at second singles over Nurila Kambar, 6-2, 6-3 to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. After Alfred tied the match at 3-3, RIT pulled off two three-set match wins in to earn the victory. Redburn started it off, beating Gillet 6-2, 1-6, 10-7, before Dimisko rallied after losing the first set, 5-7, 6-1, 10-8.
 
RIT took that momentum into game two on Saturday afternoon, winning the first eight matches in the 8-1 victory against Medaille. The Tigers swept doubles play, before dominating in singles play, winning the first five matches in straight sets.

Among the notables, Jubert, Redburn, and Jessica Coombs () didn't concede a point in either of their matches, winning 6-0, 6-0, while Dimisko and Hering conceded a single point each.

In the final match, the Tigers started out 1-2 in doubles play, with Dimisko and Hering picking up the victory. They defeated Daemen's Leighanna Hewes and Gretchen Ringler in a tight 8-6 battle. In singles play, Redburn picked up the lone victory, defeating Delaney Fragale in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
 
The Tigers will open up Liberty League play with a home matchup against Vassar on Saturday afternoon at 11 a.m. That dual match will take place at the Mendon Racquet and Pool Club in Pittsford, N.Y.
