Glaz breaks school record for points, as women's basketball loses at Union

Glaz has 407 points this season, breaking previous team record of 405; Tigers finsh regular season 19-6

SCHENECTADY, NY -- On the final day of regular season, the RIT (19-6, 12-4 Liberty League) women's basketball team was defeated by Union College (17-7, 11-5 Liberty League) 69-59 on Sunday afternoon. The 19 wins is a program record for the Tigers, who finish second in the Liberty League standings, the highest-ever finish in program history. Jessica Glaz (Rockaway Beach, NY/Scholars Academy) also broke the RIT single-season record for points.

Glaz led RIT with 23 points on 9-of-22 shooting, including five made 3-pointers. She became the all-time single-season scoring leader at RIT with her layup with two seconds left in the third quarter, giving her 407 for the season. She broke the previous mark of 405, set by Amie Banis during the 1998-99 season.

Cori Okada (Fullerton, CA/Troy) added 12 points off the bench, while Amanda Olsen (Glen Mills, PA/Archmere Academy) scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. The Tigers shot 36.5 percent on 23-of-63 shooting. RIT made 12-of-33 from behind the arc, and made its only free throw attempt.

Sophie Borg led Union with 22 points and nine rebounds. Erin Lyons and Natalie Leone each tallied 15 points, while Jenni Barra added 11 points for the Dutchwomen who shot 39.0 percent from the floor.

RIT led 12-9 after the first quarter, taking an early 8-2 lead on a jumper by Glaz. Barra's 3-pointer with 24 seconds to play in the quarter pulled Union to within 10-9, but Okada drove in laid the ball in as the buzzer sounded giving the Tigers the three-point lead. Glaz scored five the Tigers 12 points in the quarter.

Glaz extended the Tigers lead to 15-9 on her three to open the scoring in the second quarter. She took a pass from Okada and drained a deep 3-pointer giving the Tigers a six-point edge. After a Lyons bucket cut the RIT lead to 17-14, Taylor Burns (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) nailed a 3-pointer off an assist from Olsen giving the Tigers a 20-14 lead.

Helena Roland capped off a 6-0 spurt by the Dutchwomen, tying the score at 20-20 with her bucket with 5:42 to play in the half. Burns drained another three with 2:11 to play off an assist from Maria Edwards (Forrest Hill, MD/The Carroll School) giving the Tigers a slim 26-23 lead. Lyons and Borg scored the final points of the half for Union, giving the Dutchwomen a 27-26 lead at the break.

RIT shot 37.0 percent from the floor in the first half on 10-of-27 shooting. Glaz led the Tigers with 13 points, while Burns chipped in six points off the bench. Lyons led Union with eight points.

Borg extended the Union lead to 29-23 on her layup off a feed from Lyons just 15 seconds into the third quarter. Two straight layups from Julia Bender (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and Glaz gave the Tigers a 30-29 lead at the 8:44 mark of the quarter. Glaz extended the Tigers lead to 35-31 on her three with 7:46 to play. 

Olsen gave RIT a 39-35 lead on her jumper off an assist from Glaz with 4:35 to play in the quarter. The Dutchwomen out scored the Tigers 8-0 over a 2:09 span, taking a 43-39 lead on a Lyons jumper with 2:26 to play. 

The Tigers responded with a 9-2 run to close out the quarter, taking a 48-45 lead on the record-breaking layup by Glaz off an Olada assist with two seconds to play in the quarter. Okada keyed the run, tallying seven points in the stretch, including converting the rare 4-point play after being fouled while making a three.

RIT could keep the momentum going into the fourth quarter as Union out scored the Tigers 22-11 over the final 10 minutes. Leone gave the Dutchwomen the lead for good when she converted a pair of free throws at the 7:41 mark of the quarter.

Union held a 49-28 rebounding edge, while the Tigers dished out 14 assists on 23 made baskets. RIT, the number two seed will face third-seeded Union in the semfinals of the 2016 Liberty League Women's Basketball Tournament. That game will take place on Wednesday, February 24 at a time to be determined. The winner will face the winner between top-seeded Clarkson and No. 4 seed St. Lawrence University in the championship game Saturday.
