ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's basketball team (11-11, 7-6 Liberty League) scored a season-high 50 first-half points en route to a 92-75 win over first-place St. Lawrence University (12-9, 8-5 Liberty League) in a critical Liberty League contest Friday evening from Clark Gym. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Tigers.
Five Tigers scored in double figures led by
AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) and his 21 points.
Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) tallied a career-high 18 points, while
Kamron Davis (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) added 16 points,
Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) tallied 12 points and
Sheldon Clay (Detroit, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) scored 10 points for the Tigers who shot 54.2 percent from the floor.
"We needed to get off to a good start, and we were able to do that tonight," said RIT head coach
Bob McVean. "We were active offensively and were able to get easy buckets off transition."
Riley Naclerio led St. Lawrence with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Kyle Edwards added 10 points, and Ben Crawford scored 15 points for the Saints who shot 43.9 percent from the floor on 26-of-66 shooting.
The Tigers led 50-32 at the half, shooting 52.8 percent from the floor. Leading 22-14 with 12:01 to play, the Tigers out scored the Saints 28-18 over the final 12 minutes to take an 18-point lead into the break.
Horde led RIT with 10 first-half points, while Lewis added nine points, and Clay and Pierre-Louis each tallied eight points.
The Tigers built its lead to 20 points early in the second half on a jumper by Clay to open the second-half scoring for the Tigers. Davis made it 57-37 RIT on his layup with 17:59 to play, matching the Tigers largest lead of the game.
St. Lawrence responded with a 22-7 run, cutting the Tigers lead to 66-59 on a 3-pointer by Dom DeRegis off an assist from Edwards. He scored five points in the run, with a steal and an assist.
RIT weathered the Saints storm, going on a run of its own in the second half, opening up an 87-68 lead on a jumper by Lewis with 2:40 to play. That capped off a 21-9 run but the Tigers.
RIT held a slight 39-35 rebounding edge, including eight offensive rebounds. The Tigers tallied 30 points in the paint and had 19 assists on 32 made baskets.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 13 when the Tigers host Clarkson University at 4 p.m. RIT will honor its class of 2016, Davis,
Miguel Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) and Clay prior to tip-off.
