ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's basketball team (12-11, 8-6 Liberty League) completed the weekend sweep with a 70-62 win over Clarkson University (8-15, 5-9 Liberty League) Saturday. With the win, RIT moves into fourth place in the Liberty League standings with two regular season games to play. RIT honored seniors
Sheldon Clay (Detroit, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit),
Kamron Davis (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) and
Miguel Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) prior to the game.
RIT shot 43.1 percent from the floor on 25-of-58 shooting. The Tigers went 8-of-19 from behind the arc, and made 12-of-17 free throws. Four Tigers scored in double figures led by
AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) who had 18 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Clay tallied 14 points,
Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) added 13 points, Davis added 12 points and had 10 rebounds.
"I thought today was a gritty, gutsy win," said RIT head coach
Bob McVean. "We shared the ball well and got out and guarded very well, especially in the first half."
RIT fell behind by five points late in the first half after leading for much of the way. Drew Zlogar gave the Golden Knights its first lead of the game on his bucket with 7:16 to play in the half. Zlogar's jumper with 4:44 to play gave Clarkson a 35-30 lead.
The Tigers answered with a 10-4 run to close out the half, taking a 40-37 lead into the break. Clay and Davis each had four points in the run for the Tigers who shot 50.0 percent in the first half on 16-of-32 shooting. Clay led the Tigers with 12 points, while Lewis added 10 points.
RIT opened the second half on an 18-9 run, taking 58-46 lead on an old-fashioned 3-point play by
Wyatt Smith (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit). He scored on a drive to the hoop and converted the foul shot after drawing the foul.
The Golden Knights answered with a 12-3 run, cutting the Tigers lead to 61-58 with 4:49 to play on a layup by Derek Hart. Zlogar made it a 61-60 RIT lead on his two free throws with 4:30 to play in regulation.
RIT was able to make its free throws down the stretch, including four big free throws by Horde inside the last minute.
Conrad Zampier led Clarkson with 13 points, while Feliz Abongo added 12 points and eight rebounds. Zlogar chipped in 12 points off the bench, while Derek Hart added 10 points for the Golden Knights who shot 41.0 percent from the floor.
RIT returns to action on Wednesday, February 17 when they host Hobart College at 8 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gym.
