ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (4-2) men's basketball team defeated Alfred University (3-4), 81-68 in non-conference action from Clark Gymnasium Tuesday evening. Prior to the game, RIT head coach
Bob McVean was inducted into the Wendy's College Classic Hall of Fame.
RIT shot 52.1 percent from the floor on 25-of-48 shooting. The Tigers went 10-of-23 from behind the arc, and 21-of-27 from the foul line.
Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) led RIT with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) and
Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) each scored 11 points and
Joe Stortini (Red Hook, NY/Loomis Chaffee) added 10 points.
AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) led RIT with nine assists.
Sage Brown led Alfred with 20 points and five rebounds. Nick Schmidt added 12 points and Tyler Seelman added 11 points and five assists for the Saxons, who shot 32.1 percent from the floor.
RIT never trailed the entire game, opening the contest on a 10-2 run. Herman's 3-pointer at the 16:09 mark of the half, gave the Tigers an eight-point lead.
Justin Schneider (Aurora, NY/Southern Cayuga) gave RIT its largest lead of the first half to that point on his layup with 8:50 to play.
Eric Adams cut the RIT lead to 31-23 on his bucket with 3:51 to play, but RIT would close out the first half on a 10-2 run to lead 41-25 at the half.
RIT shot 48.3 percent in the first half led by Herman and his eight points. In all, 10 different Tigers scored in the first half.
The Tigers stretched their lead to 20 points early in the second half when Herman drained another 3-pointer to make 50-30.
Joe Stortini (Red Hook, NY/Loomis Chaffee) gave RIT a 23-point lead on his long distance jumper with 14:22 to play in the game.
Alfred got as close as 10 points when Schmidt hit a 3-pointer with 5:20 to play. The Saxons would get no closer as RIT was able to close out the game strong.
RIT held a 49-33 rebounding edge, tallying 20 points in the paint. The Tigers got 35 bench points and nine points off of 10 Alfred turnovers.
The Tigers return to action on Thursday, Dec., 8 when they play at Wells College, starting at 7 p.m.
