Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Steve Jaynes - Sports Information Director

Men's basketball uses late run to break open close game in 83-66 win at Wells

Tigers end game on 24-7 run as Horde scores season-high 33 points

AURORA, NY -- The RIT (5-2) men's basketball team outscored host Wells College (4-3) 24-7 over the final 10:16 of the second half to snap a 59-59 tie and beat the Express, 83-66 on Thursday evening. Junior AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) led RIT with 33 points, including 22 in the first half. He is three points shy of 1,000 for his career, which would make him the 21st player to do so in program history.

RIT shot 43.5 percent from the floor on 27-of-62 shooting. The Tigers went 11-of-25 from behind the arc, and went 18-of-22 from the foul line. Horde led all scorers with a season-high 33 points, while Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) recorded a double-double, compiling 17 points and 12 rebounds. Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) scored 11 points, and Justin Schneider (Aurora, NY/Southern Cayuga) chipped in nine points and seven rebounds.

"It's always good to get a road win," said McVean. "It wasn't easy, but I hope we learn from tonight going forward into the Liberty League season."

RIT led 49-35 at the half thanks in large part to the play of Horde. He scored 22 of the Tigers 45 points, including RIT's final 14 points of the half. RIT shot 16-of-33 (48.5%) from the floor in the first half, including 8-of-16 from behind the arc. Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) added 10 points, while Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) scored seven.

"I thought we had a lot of guys contribute tonight," said RIT head coach Bob McVean. "Mitch was excellent, especially on the boards, and I thought Troy did some really nice things for us."

Wells came back in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 24-10 to open the half. Tyree Fisher drained a 3-pointer with 9:44 to play to tie the game at 59-59 apiece, capping off the run for the Express.

"I thought we played well for most of the game," said McVean. "They picked up their pressure in the second half, and we got out of synch for a bit and didn't defend as well as we had."

On RIT's next possession, Justin Schneider (Aurora, NY/Southern Cayuga) found Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) open underneath the basket. Lewis scored on a nice reverse-layup to give RIT a 61-59 edge. That started a 12-0 run by the Tigers, as Horde made it 71-59 on his 3-pointer with 5:51 to play. He scored seven of RIT's 12 points in the run.

Horde made it a 75-61 lead with his layup with 4:04 to play, and a bucket by Wyatt Smith (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) with 3:27 to play made it 77-61 Tigers. RIT outscored Wells 24-7 down over the final 10:16 to earn its fifth win of the season.

"After they came back and tied it, I thought our conditioning paid off down the stretch," said McVean. "We made a couple shots and got into our rhythm again offensively."

The Tigers round out the 2016 portion of their season on Saturday, Dec. 10 when RIT hosts SUNY Polytechnic at 2 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gymnasium.
