Men's basketball opens Brodie Tournament with convincing win over Clark Summit

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's basketball team (2-0) defeated Clark Summit University (1-3) by a score of 88-40 in the opening round of the 32nd annual Harold J. Brodie Tournament Saturday evening from Clark Gym. The Tigers will face Wesleyan University in the title game on Sunday at 3 p.m. Clarks Summit will face Hartwick College in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

"I thought we played a good game defensively," said RIT head coach Bob McVean. "It took a bit to get the offense going, but I thought we moved the ball around very well and got a lot of different guys involved."

RIT shot 47.7 percent from the floor on 31-of-66 shooting. The Tigers were an incredible 15-for-25 from 3-point land and were 11-of-18 from the foul line. Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) led RIT with 20 points each, both career-highs. Herman drained six of eight shots from 3-point range and added five rebounds, six assists and three steals in 25 minutes. Lewis was 9-for-11 from the field in just 22 minutes. AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) added 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals, also in 22 minutes.

John McCloskey led Clark Summit with eight points, Evan Dougoud and Noah Lindsey each had four rebounds for the Defenders who shot 28.8 percent from the floor.

The game was close throughout much of the first half, but the Tigers blew the game open with a 34-7 run over the final nine minutes. RIT made 10-of-15 3-pointers in the first half to lead 44-17 at the break.

The Tigers outscored the Defenders 44-23 in the second half to advance to Sunday's title game. Wyatt Smith (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) added eight points, while Will Atkinson (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) and Joe Stortini (Red Hook, NY/Loomis Chaffee) each scored six points. In all, 13 different Tigers saw action on Saturday. Ten different Tigers hit the scoresheet.

Sunday's championship game will be the first-ever meeting between RIT and Wesleyan. Last season, the Tigers defeated Hamilton College 79-75 in the title game.
