ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (3-1) men's basketball team fell to Wesleyan University (5-0) 83-65 in the 32nd annual Harold J. Brodie Tournament Championship from Clark Gym on Sunday afternoon.
AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) and
Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) were selected to the All-Tournament team.
RIT shot 35.5 percent from the floor on 22-of-62 shooting. The Tigers went 11-of-33 from 3-point land, and were 10-of-14 from the foul line. Horde led RIT with 20 points and four assists.
Jaymee Rosser (Newark, NY/Newark) added nine points, while Herman chipped in eight points, six rebounds and four assists.
Harry Rafferty, the Brodie Tournament MVP, led Wesleyan with 14 points and three assists. All-Tournament team selection Nathan Krill added 18 points and nine rebounds, while Jordan Bonner scored 11 points and led the Cardinals with 11 boards.
"I thought we benefited greatly from the tournament," said RIT head coach
Bob McVean. "The score did not dictate it, but we executed better on offense. We got the shots that we wanted. Wesleyan is a very good team, and they executed a little better and made some more shots."
Wesleyan controlled the game from the opening tap, scoring the first seven points of the game.
Justin Schneider (Aurora, NY/Southern Cayuga) broke the run for RIT on his layup off an assist from
Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili).
The Cardinals led by as many as 21 points in the first half. RIT responded with a 12-5 run, cutting the Wesleyan lead to 13 points on a 3-pointer from Herman with 3:36 to play in the half. Wesleyan answered by scoring the final five points of the half to lead by 17.
The Tigers got to within 11 points early in the second half on jumper by Horde at the 16:31 mark of the half.
JR Bascom's bucket at the 7:49 mark extended the Wesleyan lead back to 21 points. The Tigers mounted another comeback, responding with a 13-2 run, cutting the Wesleyan lead to 71-61 on a pair of Lewis free throws.
That would be as close as the Tigers would get, as Wesleyan was able to make some clutch shots down the stretch.
RIT advanced to championship game after a dominating 88-40 win over Clark Summit on Saturday. Hartwick defeated Clark Summit 95-72 in the consolation Sunday.
RIT returns to action on Friday, Dec. 2 when the Tigers face Nazareth College at 6 p.m. in Pittsford, N.Y. The game is part of the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout.
