ITHACA, NY – The RIT wrestling team placed 14th out of 27 teams at the 2016 New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championship, hosted by Cornell University on Sunday, Nov. 20. The Tigers were sixth out of all Division III participants, as all New York schools from Division I, Division III, and junior colleges compete.
RIT finished with 24 team points, as host Cornell was victorious with 155 points. The University of Buffalo was second with 132 points. Ithaca was the top Division III school, placing fifth with 91 points. RIT was sixth overall on the afternoon with 12 wins via pin.
Wrestlers were separated into the "A" and "B" brackets. In the "A" brackets,
Nicholas Greenquist (Spring Lake, NJ/St. Rose) was RIT's best finisher, placing sixth at 184 lbs., with two wins on the day, both by major decision.
Joe Lupisella (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) placed eighth at 174 lbs., also picking up a pair of victories.
Sam Weinger (Blooming Grove, NY/Washingtonville) (285 lbs.),
John Donohue (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) (165 lbs.),
Dempsey King (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) (149 lbs.), and
Isaiah Ocasio (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) (133 lbs.) had one win each for the Tigers.
In the "B" grouping,
Wyatt Morris (Eaton, NY/Morrisville-Eaton) placed sixth overall at 285 lbs., going 3-3 on the afternoon, winning two of his matches by pin. He opened the day with a pair of falls before defeating Matthew Doty of Oneonta State, 1-0 to move into the semifinal round. Morris would fall by a score of 7-2 to Zach Maxwell of Army West Point.
Colby Hall (Deposit, NY/Deposit) went 2-2 at 149 lbs., picking up one win by fall.
Joe Demuner (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) (133 lbs.),
CJ Shade (Whiting, IN/Indiana School for the Deaf) (149 lbs.), and
Tim Baumer (Avon, NY/Avon) (197 lbs.) all picked up their first collegiate wins, all by fall.
Cole Murphy (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) (141 lbs.),
Austin Prince (Nunda, NY/Keshequa) (149 lbs.),
Dan Lucey (Massapequa, NA/Massapequa) (165 lbs.),
Joe Messare (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills) (197 lbs.) and
Kelsey Patten (Alexander, NY/Alexander) (285 lbs.) each had a win in the "B" grouping.
Earlier in the day, former RIT standout wrestler, three-time national champion (1997-99) Matt Hamill was inducted into the New York Intercollegiate Wrestling Hall of Fame.
RIT is off this week, but returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 3 to host the annual RIT Wrestling Invitational from Clark Gymnasium.
