Men's basketball defeats D'Youville on the road to open 2016-17 season

BUFFALO, NY — The RIT men's basketball team (1-0) used a balanced attack, opening the 2016-17 season with a 97-82 road victory at D'Youville College (0-1) Tuesday evening. Five Tigers scored in double figures.
 
The Tigers shot 31-for-66 (47 percent) from the field, including 11-for-27 (40.7 percent) from 3-point land. D'Youville also shot efficiently, at 43.9 percent from the floor, but the Tigers held the Spartans to 57 shots, and out-rebounded D'Youville 43-24 in the win. The Tigers led by as much as 21 during the second half, but held on for an 11-point victory.
 
"As the game progressed, we did a good job off the boards," said head coach Bob McVean. "We cut down our turnovers and found the open man. It was a good start and now we know areas to clean up."
 
Junior AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) led the floor with 23 points, along with six assists, six rebounds, and four steals. RIT junior Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) finished with 14 points, to go with a team-high seven assists, four rebounds and two steals. Senior Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) added 11 points, while Joe Stortini (Red Hook, NY/Loomis Chaffee) and Wyatt Smith (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) had 10 points apiece.
 
For D'Youville, Jeremy Vanduluitgaarden led the offense with 20 points, to go with six assists and five rebounds. Darrius Hartzog added 13 points, while Bayani Salinas had six assists, four steals and three rebounds.
 
The Tigers led 38-28 after the first half, and exploded for 59 points in the second half. Horde had 18 points in the final stanza, while 12 of Lewis' 14 points were scored in the second half.
 
The Tigers will return to action on Monday, Nov. 21 in a road contest against Wells College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
