WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The RIT wrestling team (3-8) defeated Trine University (1-10) 26-16 and King's College (4-8), 21-13 on Saturday to finish 13th overall out of 16 teams at the 2016 Budd Whitehill National Duals at Lamade Gym on the campus of Lycoming College. RIT opened the tournament with a 0-3 mark on Friday.
Sam Weinger (Blooming Grove, NY/Washingtonville) continued his good performances to record a perfect 5-0 record over the weekend and improve to 23-5 this season at 285 lbs., and 11-0 in dual meets After going 3-0 on Friday, Weinger began Saturday with a win over Joe Stasiak of Trine by injury default and earned a 4-2 victory over Ralph Bernardo of King's.
In the opener against Trine, RIT lost the first three bouts, trailing 10-0 before
Austin Prince (Nunda, NY/Keshequa) picked up a 7-0 decision over Austin Nault at 149 lbs.
Kirkland Feeney (Lockport, NY/Lockport) beat Austin Helm with a fall at 52 seconds, earning RIT nine quick points.
Joe Cutugno (Ventnor, NJ/Atlantic City) gave RIT the lead with his 10-8 decision over Brandon Gay at 165 lbs.
John Donohue (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) made it four match wins in a row for RIT when he defeated JayCee Jensen in overtime at 174 lbs, and
McKenzie Callahan (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis) beat Kerry Raab at 184 lbs. with a 15-0 technical fall. Weinger sealed the win for the Tigers with his win due to an injury ay 285 lbs.
In the final match against King's,
George Bardanis (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) gave RIT the early 3-0 lead with a tight 3-2 win over Dakota Conner at 125 lbs. After a King's win at 133, RIT would grab a 15-3 lead with three straight wins.
Jake Sepor (Stafford, NY/Pavilion) tallied an 11-2 win at 141 lbs., while Prince picked up his second straight win, 9-7 over Tony Immediato and Feeney earned a 16-1 technical fall at 157 lbs. Kings would cut the RIT lead to 15-13, but
Ezekiel Thomas (Waterford, NY/Albany Academy) would earn an 8-6 win with a takedown in overtime over Rene Sousa at 197 lbs., and Weinger secured the win with a 4-2 win.
RIT is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 16, hosting the Empire Conference Championships at Clark Gym, starting at 10 a.m.
