PHILADELPHIA, PA - Senior
Matt Giannino (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) of the RIT men's track and field team continued his remarkable season by shattering his own school record in the 5,000-meters at the prestigious Penn Relays on Thursday evening. Giannino, racing against Division I student-athletes, placed 11th overall in an excellent time of 14:15.54, crushing his previous school record by nearly 15 seconds. His time is the second fastest in Division III this season.
"Matt ran a great race," said RIT head coach Dave Warth. "The weather was very cold and windy, but Matt put himself in position early in the race top eight and then ran strong throughout. The race had only Division I runners in it except for Matt. Finishing 11th in that race was truly amazing. We often talk about burden and opportunity with Matt in other athletes. It very easily could've been a burden to run in such bad condition but Matt took it as an opportunity and really did well."RIT is right back in action on Saturday, comperting at the Cardinal Classic hosted by St. John Fisher College.
