ROCHESTER, NY – Despite just a pair of wins on the evening, the RIT wrestling team (1-1) put up a strong effort in a 31-6 loss to No. 2 Ithaca (3-1) at Clark Gym on Wednesday evening. It was RIT's first dual defeat of the season.
Dempsey King (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) and
Sam Weinger (Blooming Grove, NY/Washingtonville) earned the wins for RIT.
After Ithaca's Fred Mase opened the match with a 7-2 win over
Andrew Flanagan (Holley, NY/Holley) at 125 lbs.,
Jake Sepor (Stafford, NY/Pavilion) and Jimmy Kaishian faced off in the featured match of the evening at 133 lbs. Kaishian, ranked fifth nationally in his weight class, raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on a takedown, before Sepor rallied with two reversals and just missed a takedown to end the period. In the second, Kaishian took over with three different takedowns sandwiched around one reversal to lead 8-3. In the final period, Sepor recorded a late takedown, but Kaishian held him off to win, 8-5.
King would get his ninth win of the season for RIT at 149 lbs., with a strong performance to defeat Jawan Jones, 9-2. Jones recorded an early takedown before King took over, recording the final nine points for RIT's first victory of the evening.
RIT freshman
John Donohue (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) made a furious comeback at 165 lbs., but fell one point of drawing overtime against Ithaca's Nick Velez, who is ranked No. 5 in the country. Down 10-4 in the final period, Donohue secured a quick takedown and received two points on stalling violations to make it 10-8. Donohue had 1:49 of riding time to gain the extra point, falling 10-9.
Ithaca would pull away with a win by major decision at 174 lbs., forfeit at 184 lbs., and injury that prematurely ended the match at 197 lbs.
Weinger picked up his team-leading 14th victory of the season, rolling to a 9-4 win over Joe Sprung over Ithaca in the final match of the evening at 285 lbs. Weinger never trailed, building leads of 2-1 after one period and 5-1 after two periods before Sprung made a late effort to cut the lead to 5-4. Weinger would get an escape and takedown in the final minute along with riding time
RIT concludes action for the fall semester on Saturday at the Northeast Duals hosted by SUNY Oneonta on Saturday. RIT takes on No. 30 Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 12 p.m. and No. 14 Johnson and Wales at 4 p.m.
