Men's basketball falls to Brooklyn College in 2015-16 season opener

CLEVELAND, OH -- The RIT (0-1) men's basketball team was defeated by Brooklyn College (1-0) 91-68 in the opening round of the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Tournament on the campus of Case Western Reserve University Friday evening. The Tigers will face the loser between Gaucher and Case Western Reserve in the consolation round at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

RIT shot 40.3 percent from the floor on 27-of-67 shooting. The Tigers went 7-of-26 (26.9%) from behind the arc, and shot 7-of-13 from the foul line. Senior Miguel Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) led RIT with 13 points and added nine rebounds. Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) and Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) each scred 12 points, while Alex Wightman (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) added 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Pierre-Louis led the Tigers with four assists.

Egzon Gjonbalaj led Brooklyn College with 20 points and seven rebounds. Nicholas Grasso tallied 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, Jamel Gist and Enees Nikovic each scored 12 points.

Trailing 20-5 early in the first half, RIT responded with a mini-run, cutting the Brooklyn College lead to 20-12 on a layup by Pierre-Louis with 10:27 remaining. The Tigers would get no closer, trailing 41-24 at the half. RIT shot 28.6 percent from the floor in the first half, but were able to score 12 points off of nine Brookly turnovers. Lopez led RIT with seven points, while Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) added five points.

RIT got as close as 11 points in the second half on a layup by Wightman with 14:32 to play. But, Brooklyn slowly pulled away in the second half for the 91-68 win. The Tigers grabbed 33 rebounds, including 12 offensive rebounds. RIT tallied 19 points off of 17 Brookly College turnovers.
