Second half comeback comes up short as men's basketball loses to Goucher

CLEVELAND, OH -- Despite a valiant effort, the RIT (0-2) men's basketball team was defeated by Goucher College (1-1) 84-68 in the consolation game of the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Tournament hosted by Case Western Reserve on Saturday. The Tigers were within one point of the lead in the second half before a late Goucher run sealed the win. Five Tigers scored in double figures.

RIT shot 37.1% from the floor on 23-of-62 shooting. The Tigers made just 3-of-13 from behind the arc, and went 19-of-26 from the foul line. Sophomore Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) led RIT with 13 points. Wyatt Smith (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) and Miguel Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) both scored 12 points, while Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Alex Wightman (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) each tallied 10 points. Lopez was selected to the all-tournament team.

Kevin Miles led Goucher with a game-high 33 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Mychal Stefanides added 10 points, while Ibrahim Kallon tallied eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The first half saw RIT fall behind by as many as 11 points. But the Tigers rallied to get within two points at the break. Goucher's Tucker Canary gave the Gophers a 27-16 lead on his three with 8:57 to play in the half. Pierre-Louis answered right back for the Tigers, draining a three on RIT's next possession, cutting the Goucher lead to 27-19.

Smith's layup with 7:37 to play in the opening half cut the Goucher lead to 27-23. Later in the half, Ed Oliver gave the Gophers a 34-27 lead with his layup with 2:57 to play. The Tigers outscored Goucher 7-2 over the final 2:57 to cut the lead to 36-34 at the half. Smith tallied four points, while Lopez added two in the late run for the Tigers.

A layup by Lewis early in the second half cut the Goucher lead to 44-43. He stole the ball from Jesse Mondry and drove in for th layup to pull the Tigers to within a point. After a Goucher bucket made it a three point lead, Wightman came down and laid the ball in off a feed from Lewis cutting the lead back down to one at 46-45 with 14:31 to play.

The Tigers got to within one at the 10:05 mark when Kevin Drain (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) grabbed an offensive board off a Lewis miss, and put back the rebound, cutting the Goucher lead to 56-55. That would be as close as RIT would get as Goucher extended its lead to 72-62 on a Kevin Miles layup with 4:03 to play, and never looked back.

RIT grabbed 35 rebounds, including 16 offensive boards. The Tigers scored 26 points in the paint, and 11 points off of 15 Goucher turnovers.

The Tigers return to action next Friday when RIT hosts the Harold J. Brodie Tournament. The Tigers face D'Youville College at 8 p.m., preceded by Hamilton College vs. Keuka College at 6 p.m.
