ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's basketball team (1-2) picked up its first win of the season Friday evening, defeating D'Youville College (1-2) 98-82 in the first round of the 31
st Annual Harold J. Brodie Tournament. The Tigers will face Hamilton College in the championship game tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. D'Youville will face Keuka College on the consolation game at 1 p.m.
RIT shot 54.9 percent from the floor on 39-of-71 shooting. The Tigers went 7-of-21 from behind the arc, and were 13-of-23 from the foul line. RIT featured six players scoring in double figures, led by
Kamron Davis (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) who scored 16 points and had nine rebounds.
AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) and
Wyatt Smith (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) each scored 12 points, while
Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) added 11 points.
Miguel Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) and
Randy Golda (Lackawanna, NY/Park School) each had 10 points.
Marcus Clarke led D'Youville with 24 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the floor. Zach Blask added 18 points, while Nate Sweetman came off the bench to score 14 for the Spartans who shot 45.1 percent from the floor.
D'Youville led early in the first half, building a four-point lead on a jumper from Blask with 14:31 to play. Clarke gave the Spartans an early 4-0 lead with his jumper just 1:15 into the game.
The Tigers answered back and took the lead for good with 11:09 to play in the half on an
Alex Wightman (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) dunk off an assist from
Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili). The Tigers opened up a 34-25 lead on a 3-pointer from Smith with 6:13 to play in the half.
Troy Pierre-Louis (Providence, RI/Berkshire School) matched the Tigers largest lead with his jumper with 5:37 to play.
RIT outscored D'Youville 29-13 over the final 11 minutes of the first half, taking a 45-30 lead into the break. RIT shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half on 19-of-38 shooting. Horde led RIT with nine points as 11 different Tigers scored in the first half.
The Tigers jumped out to a 20-point lead early in the second thanks to a 12-3 run to open the half. Smith had eight points in the run, while Herman drained a long three to help RIT build its largest lead of the game.
D'Youville got within 11 points late in the game on a jumper by Sweetman, but Davis put the exclamation point on the win for RIT with his monstrous tomahawk dunk.
The Tigers scored 60 of their 98 points in the paint, while tallying 19 points off of 14 D'Youville turnovers. RIT held a 48-34 rebounding edge, including 14 offensive rebounds that led to 22 points. Horde led RIT with eight assists. Lopez had three steals, Davis and Smith led RIT with nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday where they face Hamilton College. RIT has nine wins over the Continentals in 21 games, but the two teams have not met since the 1992-93 season.
