Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, DC – The RIT volleyball team (14-11) split a pair of matches on Saturday and finished seventh overall at the 2015 Worthington Classic hosted by Gallaudet University on Saturday. RIT opened the day with a three-set loss to Messiah (18-2), but rebounded with a three-set victory over Illinois Institute of Technology (9-11).
In the opener against Messiah, the Falcons rolled to a 25-17, 25-12, 25-8 victory over RIT.
The Tigers struggled to get much of anything going, offensively or defensively in this loss.
Sarah Szybist (Chicago, IL/Ramstein) led RIT with 10 kills, while
Amy Van Hienen (Castor, Alberta/Gus Wetter) added five.
Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) dished out 16 assists and had 10 digs, while
Rebecca Bennett (Springfield, PA/Springfield) added 11 digs.
Aleah Chinn (Wichita, KS/Witchita Southeast) hit .429 with three kills.
This has been a great tournament so far," said RIT head coach
Jim Lodes. "The competition is showing us areas we need to improve in order to compete at a higher level. I'm hopeful these lessons will pay off in future weekends."
Against Illinois Institute of Technology, RIT bounced back, sweeping with scores of 25-16, 25-19, 26-24, while hitting .301 as a team.
Offensively, Szybist led the Tigers by hitting .520 with 15 kills, while Van Hienen added 14 kills and 10 digs, and
Taylor Harkness (Batavia, NY/Batavia) slammed eight kills. Parkinson dished out 40 assists to go along with 11 digs and a pair of kills.
Abby Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) and
Rebecca Bennett (Springfield, PA/Springfield) combined for seven service aces. Bennett also added a team-high 12 digs.
"I thought we played a more consistent match emotionally and with our effort," said Lodes. "This was a solid bounce back performance. I'm excited to prepare for Liberty League matches next weekend."
RIT returns to action with the second of its three Liberty League crossover weekends on Oct. 16-17. The Tigers travel to face Bard and Union at Vassar on Oct. 16 and Skidmore and Vassar at Bard on Oct. 17.
