ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's hockey team (10-12-4, 9-7-4 AHC) got back in the win column by defeating visiting Army (6-18-2, 6-14-2 AHC) 4-1 in front of 2,650 fans at the Gene Polisseni Center on Saturday night.
RIT's top line of
Matt Garbowsky (St. George, Ontario/Powell River Kings),
Josh Mitchell (Osoyoos, British Columbia/Alberni Valley Bulldogs), and
Brad McGowan (Langley, British Columbia/Surrey Eagles) combined for eight points. Garbowsky tallied a pair of goals and added an assist, while
Josh Mitchell (Osoyoos, British Columbia/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) tied a career-high with three assists, and
Brad McGowan (Langley, British Columbia/Surrey Eagles) added a goal and an assist.
RIT out-shot Army, 34-23.
Todd Skirving (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Sioux Falls Stampede) scored a third period power-play goal for the Tigers, while goaltender
Mike Rotolo (Rochester, NY/Cedar Rapids Roughriders) picked up his fourth straight win, stopping 22 shots. Rotolo has stopped 176 of his last 187 shots faced (.941 save percentage) over the last seven games.
RIT's power-play, which came into the game 55th nationally at 11.3 percent, scored twice on just two attempts. RIT's penalty-killing was excellent, despite having its streak of 29 consecutive kills snapped, holding Army to just one goal in eight attempts with the man-advantage, including two long 5-on-3 advantages.
C.J. Reuschlein scored Army's lone goal, a power-play marker in the second period that cut the RIT lead to 2-1. Cole Bruns made 30 saves in the loss.
"We've been playing pretty consistent with the exception of last night (a 4-2 loss to Army)," said RIT head coach
Wayne Wilson. "We played well and really had to play well tonight. We took a couple of undisciplined penalties, but our penalty kill was tremendous. We switched a few things up tonight and that helped us."
The Tigers came out with much more focus in the first period tonight, as opposed to last night, out-shooting Army 13-4 and scoring the lone goal of the period.
Just 12 seconds in,
Myles Powell (Courtenay, British Columbia/Cowichan Valley Capitals) had a great chance in front after the initial shot by Skirving was stopped but Bruns gobbled up that chance as well.
Garbowsky would tally his 18th goal of the season on the power-play at the 7:40 mark, stuffing his own rebound over Bruns from the right side of the net to make it 1-0 Tigers. Garbowsky won the faceoff to
Chase Norrish (Strongfield, Saskatchewan/Yorkton Terriers), who then fed
Josh Mitchell (Osoyoos, British Columbia/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) down low back up to
Brad McGowan (Langley, British Columbia/Surrey Eagles) on the win. McGowan found Garbowsky at the side of the net. His first shot was stopped, but he chipped the rebound over Bruns for the goal.
RIT's penalty-killing had to be big late in the opening period, as they killed off 33 seconds of a 5-on-3 power-play by Army.
Garbowsky looked to give RIT a 2-0 lead early in the period, as he jammed home a loose puck after a shot from McGowan went off the side of the net and in front, but the play was whistled dead by the officials before the puck went in.
At the 12:14 mark, Garbowsky officially gave RIT a 2-0 lead, by firing shot from the right side by Bruns on the short side for his second of the game and 19th of the season.
Alexander Kuqali (Pittsburgh, PA/Sioux City Musketeers) fired a shot that went over the net, but bounced off the back glass off Mitchell's skate right to Garbowsky.
Army would cut the lead in half on a power-play with 4:09 left in the period, as Reuschlein fired in a shot from the slot over Rotolo for his sixth goal of the season. Tyler Pham came into the RIT zone with a full head of steam and cut to the goal, before getting stood up by a RIT defender, but the loose puck came right to Reuschlein.
The Tigers penalty-killing unit had to come up huge in the final minutes of the period, as Army was awarded 1:35 of a 5-on-3 advantage. RIT did a tremendous job winning key defensive zone face-offs and blocking shots, including one by
Danny Smith (Edmonton, Alberta/Sherwood Park Crusaders) on Maurice Alvarez from the slot.
RIT would put the game away in the third period with a pair of goals. Skirving would make it 3-1 on the power-play with 7:32 left, taking a perfect feed from
Caleb Cameron (Sunridge, Ontario/Listowel Cyclones) on the doorstep to slip it past Bruns.
Myles Powell (Courtenay, British Columbia/Cowichan Valley Capitals) would also get an assist on the goal.
Just 1:47 later, McGowan would take a feed from Mitchell in the neutral zone and rocket a wrist shot past Bruns from about 40-feet out that knuckled to complete the scoring. Garbowsky would also earn an assist on the goal, McGowan's eighth of the season.
Garbowsky and Mitchell now have nine multiple-point outings this season, while McGowan has six. Garbowsky is second nationally with 19 goals and has a team-best 35 points, while Mitchell has 30 points on the year.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 14-3-5 and is 7-2-3 against the Black Knights on home ice. Last night, Joe Kozlak had a goal and two assists in Army's 4-2 win over the Tigers.
Alex Perron-Fontaine (St. Mathieu de Beloeil, Quebec/Chilliwack Chiefs) scored both RIT goals.
The Tigers are right back in action next weekend with a home-and-home series against league foe Niagara. Friday's game from Dwyer Arena starts at 7:05, while Saturday's contest from the Gene Polisseni Center also begins at 7:05 p.m.
On Saturday, the RIT men's and women's hockey teams will honor fifth-year student manager Joe Vicario, better known as "Part Time Joe". Both teams will wear special jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game with proceeds going to the Testicular Cancer Foundation of Western New York, which Vicario founded, and the Lipton Cancer Center at Rochester General Hospital through the RIT United Way Campaign.
