Himself a stellar performer at Monroe High School and later Cortland State, Todd retired from RIT after 32 years as men's track and cross country coach. During his career, Todd's coaching record included a 226-75 mark in cross country and 150-8 in track. His track teams never lost a home dual meet with a string of 108 victories.

Eleven of his cross country teams won Upper New York State titles while his track teams captured 20 crowns. Nine of his cross country teams placed in the top 10 at the NCAA Division III Championships with a third place finish in 1985.

When the present RIT campus opened in 1968, Todd and several of his cross country runners alternated carrying a torch non-stop from Washington, DC to the campus. In 1979 when the institute celebrated its 150th anniversary, Todd and 11 alumnus ran non-stop coast-to-coast from California to Maryland and on to RIT. The event, recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records, took just over 14 days and covered 2,846.5 miles.
